Brașov Travel Guide: Old Town, Tâmpa and Day Trips

Brașov brings together a walkable historic centre and the wooded slopes of Tâmpa. Start with the cafés and pastel façades around Piața Sfatului, then explore the Black Church, old gates and streets leading into Șchei. Give the city two nights if you want an unhurried visit and time for a mountain outing or a castle day trip.

Piața Sfatului and the Old Town

Piața Sfatului is the natural starting point for a first walk, with the Council House standing in the square. Explore the streets around it before choosing somewhere to stop for coffee. The pleasure here is in the small details: doorways, changing rooflines and the way the mountain appears between buildings. Visit once during the day and again in the evening for a different atmosphere.

The Black Church

The Black Church is Brașov’s major Gothic landmark and an active Evangelical church. Its scale makes a strong impression even from the surrounding courtyard. For the interior, check the church’s visitor information and allow time to look beyond a quick photograph. Religious services, concerts and conservation work can affect access. An organ concert can be a rewarding alternative to a standard visit when one fits your dates.

Old gates, Strada Sforii and Șchei

Continue towards Strada Sforii, the narrow street often included in walking tours, then look for Catherine’s Gate and the surviving fortifications. Extend your route into Șchei for St Nicholas Church and the First Romanian School museum. This creates a more varied walk than remaining around the main square all day. Treat the church as a place of worship and confirm museum access before making it the centrepiece of your afternoon.

Tâmpa and Poiana Brașov

Tâmpa provides the classic elevated view over the historic centre. Decide between a hike and the cable car using current weather, trail conditions and operating information; a mountain path requires more preparation than a city walk. Poiana Brașov is a separate resort area above the city, useful for a change of scenery and seasonal mountain activities. The photograph here shows the landscape near Poiana, rather than the view from Tâmpa.

A suggested Brașov itinerary

This is a flexible editorial suggestion. Adapt it to opening arrangements, your interests and the weather.

Day 1: Begin in Piața Sfatului, visit the Black Church if open, and continue through the old gates towards Șchei. Leave time for lunch and a slow return through the centre. Keep this day flexible rather than booking several interiors back to back.

Day 2: Choose a Tâmpa outing in suitable conditions, or spend the morning exploring smaller museums and neighbourhood streets. Use the afternoon for Poiana Brașov if you want a mountain setting. Moving a weather-dependent activity to the better day makes this plan easier to enjoy.

With a third day: Choose one substantial excursion, such as Bran or a trip towards Sinaia. Check travel connections and attraction access separately. Combining several castles and a hike into one day leaves little time at any of them.

Getting to Brașov and getting around

Compare rail connections to Brașov using the current timetable, particularly if you are arriving from Bucharest or travelling between Transylvanian cities. The railway station and the Old Town are different parts of the city, so plan the final transfer to your accommodation. If arriving by air, compare the full airport-to-hotel journey rather than choosing by flight price alone. Check which airport, arrival time and onward services fit your trip.

Walk between the central sights where practical. For Poiana Brașov, the station or accommodation outside the centre, check the local route and fare before travelling. If driving, confirm parking with your host: a property described as central may be on a pedestrian street or have parking elsewhere. A rental car is useful for some rural trips, but it also adds parking and mountain-driving considerations.

Where to stay in Brașov

Choose the Old Town or its edge for a first visit focused on restaurants and walking. Ask about night-time noise, steps, air conditioning and how close a taxi can reach the entrance. Șchei can suit travellers who prefer a neighbourhood setting and do not mind a longer walk. Poiana Brașov suits a trip centred on the resort and mountains; staying there means planning transport for evenings in the city.

When comparing accommodation, check the total price, cancellation terms and recent guest comments about the features that matter to you. For a guided visit, compare the meeting point, language, group size and what admission is included.

Practical visiting tips

Wear comfortable shoes for uneven paving and carry an extra layer for higher ground. City sightseeing and mountain hiking need different plans: check conditions before heading onto Tâmpa, keep to appropriate marked routes and allow daylight for the return. Do not approach or feed wildlife. Confirm accessibility directly with the church, museums and accommodation if stairs or steep streets are a concern.

Check current opening times, tickets and accessibility directly before travelling. Where a visit needs a reservation, arrange it before building the rest of the day around it.

Continue exploring Transylvania

Brașov works well as one stop on a wider Transylvania itinerary. Add Sighișoara for a smaller fortified town or Sibiu for historic squares and museums. Keep your first full day in Brașov free of long transfers so you have time to enjoy the city itself.
