Squares & culture

Sibiu

Explore the Large and Small Squares, distinctive roof windows and lanes linking the upper and lower town. Add the Brukenthal Museum or the ASTRA open-air museum, and leave time for a meal in the historic centre.

Trip idea: Stay a couple of nights to balance city sights with nearby villages.

Culture & cafés

Cluj-Napoca

Pair the historic centre with a visit to the Botanical Garden, then settle into the city’s café scene. Cluj is a useful starting point for exploring the western part of the region.

Trip idea: Add a separate day for Turda Salt Mine or the Apuseni foothills.

Gothic architecture

Corvin Castle

In Hunedoara, Corvin Castle offers a striking approach across its bridge, followed by towers, courtyards and grand halls. Make it a dedicated stop on a western Transylvania route.

Before you go: Check opening hours and access on the official castle website.

Citadel walks

Alba Iulia

Walk through the gates and broad spaces of Alba Carolina Citadel. It makes a rewarding history stop between Sibiu and Cluj, especially if you prefer an afternoon on foot to another long drive.

Rural heritage

Viscri & Biertan

Explore villages shaped by Transylvania’s Saxon heritage and fortified churches. Viscri and Biertan form part of the UNESCO-listed village sites; allow time for the landscape and local crafts as well as the monuments.

An underground detour

Turda Salt Mine

Step into the large underground spaces of this former salt mine near Cluj. Check visitor information before setting off, and bring an extra layer for the cooler conditions below ground.

A little planning goes a long way

Visiting Bran Castle

Pair the castle with Brașov or an overnight stay in Bran. Give yourself time for the interior and grounds, and check the castle’s own history for the distinction between the Dracula legend and its medieval and royal past.

Check current tickets and visiting arrangements directly with the attraction.

Exploring Brașov

Start in Council Square, visit the Black Church and wander the surrounding lanes. Set aside a separate half-day for Tâmpa if you want to walk; choose your route around your fitness and the weather.

An old-town stay suits walking; check parking arrangements if arriving by car.

Exploring Sighișoara

Follow the citadel lanes around the Clock Tower and climb the covered Scholars’ Stairway towards the Church on the Hill. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cobbles, slopes and steps can make access uneven. Ask your accommodation about the approach with luggage.

Beyond the towns

Into the Carpathian landscapes

Choose a mountain day that fits your experience: a village walk, a gorge route or a carefully planned high-altitude adventure.

Piatra Craiului

Use Zărnești as a starting point for limestone gorges and mountain scenery. Gorge walks and exposed ridge hikes are very different undertakings: check national park guidance and choose an appropriate marked trail.

Apuseni Mountains

Head west for wooded hills, rural stays and cave landscapes. Plan individual cave visits around official access arrangements; use a qualified guide for specialist underground exploration.

Transfăgărășan & Bâlea Lake

The winding road through the Făgăraș Mountains can be a memorable addition to a Sibiu-based trip. The high section is seasonal and weather dependent, so confirm road access close to your visit and keep an alternative route.

Mountain conditions can change quickly. Check the forecast and local advice, carry suitable footwear and layers, and allow time to turn back. Never approach or feed wildlife.

Transylvania itinerary ideas

These flexible starting points assume arrival in or near the region. Adjust them to your transport, interests and available time.

3–4 days · One base

Brașov & its surroundings

  • Day 1: Settle into Brașov and explore the old town.
  • Day 2: Visit Bran Castle, with time for Bran village.
  • Day 3: Choose a suitable mountain walk or a fortified-church visit.
  • Optional day 4: Enjoy a slower city day or extend your stay for another excursion.
7–10 days · Several stops

A journey through the region

  • Start in Brașov: Allow two or three nights for the city, Bran and a nearby outing.
  • Continue to Sighișoara: Spend a night in or near the citadel; add a village stop if transport allows.
  • Spend two nights in Sibiu: Explore the old town and choose a museum or countryside day.
  • Finish towards Cluj: Stop in Alba Iulia. With extra days, add Corvin Castle or an Apuseni stay rather than rushing both.

Allow a substantial part of transfer days for travel. Check current connections or driving routes before booking; rural detours are easier with a car or an organised excursion.

Build your trip

Stay well. Explore more. Travel comfortably.

Accommodation

Choose Brașov for castle visits, Sibiu for culture and nearby villages, or Cluj for a western route. An overnight stop in Sighișoara lets you explore beyond the busiest part of the day.

Compare location, parking, cancellation terms and access with luggage. Rural guesthouses can suit a slower trip; ask about meals and arrival arrangements before booking.

Tours & activities

A walking tour can bring a historic centre to life. Castle excursions and guided mountain outings can also help when you prefer to leave transport or route planning to someone local.

Check the language, meeting point, group size, walking difficulty and whether admission and transport are included. Choose wildlife experiences that keep a respectful distance.

Car rental & transport

Trains and buses can connect the main towns, while a rental car offers more flexibility for villages and rural stays. Check current timetables before fixing your route.

For a car, compare the deposit, insurance excess, mileage, fuel policy and one-way fees. Confirm licence requirements with the provider and seasonal equipment for your dates.

Practical travel tips

When to visit

Spring and autumn suit town visits and countryside days, with layers for changeable weather. Summer brings longer days for exploring; popular attractions can be busy. Winter offers a different atmosphere, but mountain routes and services may be limited.

Choose dates around your priorities rather than assuming every high-altitude road or trail will be accessible.

Keep plans flexible

Check opening days, ticket arrangements and transport shortly before travelling. Book accommodation around a realistic route, and leave some space for delays or a place you would like to enjoy for longer.

Comfortable shoes help on cobbles and castle stairs. Ask venues directly about step-free access.

Your questions, answered

How many days should I spend in Transylvania?

Three or four days work for one base and nearby excursions. A week or more gives you room for several towns and countryside stops. Your arrival point and transport will shape what fits comfortably.

Can I visit without renting a car?

Yes. Build a route around the main towns using current train and bus connections, then consider organised day trips for places that are harder to reach. Avoid assuming frequent transport to small villages.

Is Bran Castle really Dracula’s castle?

It is widely associated with the Dracula legend, but that association should be distinguished from the castle’s documented history. Visit for the fortress, its setting and royal heritage as well as the story.

Can I add Peleș Castle?

Yes, as a separate excursion or a stop near Sinaia when travelling between Bucharest and Brașov. Peleș lies south of Transylvania, so account for the extra journey and check the castle’s visiting arrangements.
