The Vrancea Mountains form a quieter corner of Romania’s Curvature Carpathians, where forested ridges, river gorges and high meadows meet. The best-known gateway is Lepșa on the DN2D, but the wider region rewards travellers who allow time for slow roads, weather changes and village stops. This guide combines the accessible Putna waterfall and Tisita Valley with more demanding routes toward Goru and Lăcăuți.

Getting there and choosing a base
Focșani is the main regional hub, with onward road travel west along DN2D toward Tulnici and Lepșa. A car gives the most flexibility because trailheads and villages are spread across a large area; check road conditions and fuel before leaving the main towns. Lepșa is a practical base for the gorge and waterfall, while Focșani works for the wine country and city services. Public transport schedules can be limited, so confirm connections locally rather than planning a tight same-day transfer.
Highlights in the mountains
- Tișiței Gorge: the marked valley walk follows the river through a dramatic protected landscape. The local tourism authority describes a roughly 7 km section from Gura Tișiței to the large tunnel, commonly planned as a 5–6 hour return outing.
- Putna Waterfall: a straightforward stop near DN2D and Lepșa, ideal for a short visit or as a complement to a longer day outdoors.
- Goru and Lăcăuți peaks: a demanding ridge outing with broad views and subalpine vegetation. Visit Vrancea lists a marked route between the Goru stream, Goru Peak and Lăcăuți taking around 5–6 hours; allow more time for access and changing conditions.
- Negru Lake and Năruja valley: a more remote nature excursion that should be planned with current local route advice.
- Vrancea wine country: return east for the vineyards and wineries around Odobești, Cotești, Jariștea and Panciu.
Suggested itineraries
One day: visit Putna Waterfall, then walk as far into the Tișiței valley as conditions and daylight allow. The tunnel is a natural turnaround point for many visitors. Two days: dedicate a full day to Tișiței Gorge and a second to the Goru–Lăcăuți area only if your fitness, transport and the latest mountain advice match the route. Three days: add a relaxed stop in Focșani or the vineyard area, keeping one flexible day for rain or river-level changes.
Safety, seasons and practical notes
Spring through autumn is the usual hiking window, but storms can raise streams quickly. The Visit Vrancea guidance warns that footbridges may be affected by floods, the gorge route can be hazardous in heavy rain, and the route is closed in winter because of avalanche danger. Wear grippy footwear and a helmet in the gorge, carry a torch for the tunnel, and stay on marked paths. Do not enter flooded crossings or continue beyond the route you can safely reverse. Call 112 in an emergency and consult local Salvamont before mountain hikes.
Stay, eat and plan
Lepșa and Tulnici have guesthouses and places to eat, while Focșani offers the broadest choice of services. Check meal availability with rural accommodation in advance and carry water and snacks for long walks. Respect protected areas, wildlife and private pastureland.
