Sfântu Gheorghe in the Danube Delta: beach, boat access, wildlife and the ANONIMUL festival
Choose Sfântu Gheorghe for a Delta stay with village time and the Black Sea close by. This guide concerns the settlement in Tulcea County, rather than the city of the same name in Covasna. Make that distinction when searching for accommodation, transport or weather information.

A village between the river and sea
Tulcea County Council describes Sfântu Gheorghe as a fishing village at the meeting of the Danube and Black Sea, with sandy paths, canal excursions and a broad coastal beach. Its appeal is the combination: village walks, time beside the water and opportunities to explore with a local guide. Source: Tulcea County Council.
Plan a stay with one or two priorities each day. A morning excursion and an afternoon at the beach can work better than several distant outings squeezed together. Ask your host what is realistically available during your dates, especially outside the main holiday season.
Getting to Sfântu Gheorghe
Plan the final approach by boat. NAVROM Delta lists the Tulcea–Sfântu Gheorghe route via Bălteni de Jos and Mahmudia. Use its timetable for the date you actually intend to travel and confirm the return connection before booking your stay. Source: NAVROM Delta route network.
Some accommodation operators also organise transfers from Murighiol. Green Dolphin Camping identifies Ponton STAR 2000 Murighiol as its boarding point and asks guests to reserve ahead. Its transport page still displays timetables and prices labelled 2025, so obtain a current quotation instead of using those figures as a 2026 promise. Check the precise dock, luggage allowance, boarding assistance and transfer to your accommodation. If you arrive by car at an upstream boarding point, arrange parking with the operator. Leave spare time on both travel days.
The beach and village walks
The county council places the sandy beach beside the river’s meeting with the sea. Treat beach time as a separate outing from your boat excursion, and ask locally about the route and any transport currently available. Source: Tulcea County Council.
Take water, a sunhat and a layer for the breeze. Check conditions and swimming guidance on the day; an attractive river mouth should not be taken as evidence that entering the water is safe. Allow time to return to the village before your evening plans.
For a village walk, keep your route simple and respect residential spaces. If you want to try local fish cooking, ask your host about meals in advance and discuss dietary requirements. Avoid assuming every kitchen can accommodate a late arrival without notice.
Wildlife excursions and protected areas
Sacalin–Zătoane is a specially protected area. The county council says tourist access is prohibited and birds should be observed from a distance. Choose a guide who explains the permitted viewing route, rather than an excursion promising a landing in the protected area. Source: Tulcea County Council.
Ask about the outing’s length, group size, weather alternative and opportunities for quiet observation. Bring binoculars and accept that particular birds may not appear. The Danube Delta travel guide explains access permits and visitor conduct; check your own activities through the ARBDD permit portal.
The ANONIMUL film festival
Sfântu Gheorghe hosts the ANONIMUL International Independent Film Festival. The organisers confirm that its 23rd edition took place on 10–16 August 2026, with screenings, filmmaker discussions and other activities. These are past dates, not an announcement for the next edition. Source: festival organisers.
If cinema is the reason for your trip, check the next programme directly before arranging transport. Book accommodation around the confirmed dates and give yourself enough time for late screenings and an unhurried departure.
A first-stay suggestion
Allow three nights if you want an arrival afternoon, a guided wildlife outing, a beach day and a flexible return. This is a planning suggestion rather than a fixed tour. Agree the details with your host and operator once you know the boat connections.
