Sulina travel guide: the Old Lighthouse Museum, maritime heritage, beach and boat connections

Sulina combines a Delta journey with maritime history and time by the Black Sea. Give the town enough room in your itinerary for its museum, waterfront and beach, then add a boat excursion if your connections allow. An overnight stay is a more comfortable starting point than a tightly timed visit between two unconfirmed departures.

Begin with the waterfront

Sulina’s riverside walk introduces its international port heritage. Tulcea County Council identifies the Church of St Alexander and St Nicholas and the former European Commission of the Danube Palace among the landmarks along the waterfront. The palace now serves the local waterways administration, so treat it as an exterior stop unless interior access has been specifically confirmed. Source: Tulcea County Council.

Use this first walk to orient yourself: locate your accommodation, the departure pontoon and the route you plan to follow the next day. Ask your host about local transport and meal arrangements before setting out on a longer excursion.

The Old Lighthouse Museum

The lighthouse museum at 43, Strada a II-a presents documents and photographs about Sulina during the European Commission of the Danube period. It also introduces conductor George Georgescu and writer Jean Bart, two important figures associated with the town. ICEM records the building’s conversion into a museum in 2003.

The museum page lists admission at 20 lei for adults, 10 lei for pensioners and 5 lei for preschool children, pupils and students, checked on 5 October 2026. Check applicable concessions when visiting. Source: ICEM lighthouse museum.

The October 2026 schedule gives Tuesday–Sunday, 08:00–16:00; Monday closed. Source: ICEM’s autumn timetable.

Allow time for the exhibition rather than treating the lighthouse solely as a photograph stop. If stairs or narrow spaces may affect your visit, ask ICEM about the parts you can access before travelling.

The maritime cemetery and beach

The maritime cemetery lies on the way out of town towards the beach. Its Christian, Muslim and Jewish sections reflect Sulina’s varied communities. The county council places the beach approximately two kilometres from town; your actual walk depends on where you start. Source: Tulcea County Council.

Visit the cemetery respectfully: keep to accessible paths, avoid touching memorials and remember that this is a burial place. For the beach, take water and sun protection and check weather and local swimming guidance. Confirm seasonal services locally rather than assuming every facility operates throughout the year.

Arrange both boat journeys

A fast-transfer option is Sulina Trans, whose website advertises 100 lei per person per journey, checked on 5 October 2026. It lists Tulcea boarding at either the AZL pontoon or Nova Marina, 7 Strada Bacului, and Sulina boarding at its waterfront pontoon near SURU COM supermarket. Confirm the exact pontoon, date, departure and availability directly: +40 748 369 173. Source: Sulina Trans.

Compare that option with the scheduled passenger service linked in our Danube Delta guide. Ask about luggage, children, boarding assistance and whether the quoted fare includes any accommodation transfer. Reserve your return as carefully as your outward journey.

A relaxed two-night plan

As an itinerary suggestion, arrive and settle in on day one, then walk the waterfront. On day two, visit the lighthouse during its opening hours and continue towards the cemetery and beach if conditions suit. Use remaining time for an excursion agreed with a local operator, or keep it free for the town. Leave a buffer on departure day.

For reserve access and activity permits, use the official ARBDD portal. Our Delta guide explains the current tourist permit options and responsible wildlife viewing.
