The Parâng Mountains form one of Romania’s highest and most dramatic parts of the Southern Carpathians. Their long crest rises above Petroșani and the Jiu Valley, with Parângul Mare reaching 2,519 metres and glacial lakes tucked beneath the ridges. Visitors can approach from the Parâng resort above Petroșani or from Rânca on the southern side. These are distinct gateways, so plan transport and trailheads before trying to connect them in one trip.

Two useful bases
Petroșani and the Parâng resort: Petroșani is the main town in the Jiu Valley and a practical transport and supply hub. The Parâng resort sits above the town. The Petroșani Tourist Information Centre describes the cableway and access arrangements; seasonal access can differ, so confirm the lift operation and road approach in advance.
Rânca: the resort lies on the southern slopes, on DN67C (Transalpina), and is a base for routes toward nearby high peaks. The Transalpina high section is seasonal and may close in winter; official local tourism information says winter access to Rânca is from Novaci, rather than across the high pass. Check road status before setting out.
Highlights of the range
- Parângul Mare: the 2,519-metre summit is a serious high-mountain objective. A summit day requires fitness, navigation, a stable forecast and adequate daylight. Do not attempt it as a casual extension from a resort walk.
- Glacial lakes: lakes such as Gâlcescu and the Roșiile basin bring clear water, rocky cirques and alpine scenery. Reaching them involves longer marked mountain routes and exposed terrain, not a simple roadside stop.
- Rânca’s uplands: from the resort, local paths lead toward viewpoints and peaks including Păpușa and Setea Mare. Select a route using current local markings and the forecast.
- Parâng resort above Petroșani: use it for shorter walks or winter sports when lifts and facilities are operating. Conditions vary from day to day.
- Jiu Valley culture: balance a mountain day with Petroșani, nearby villages and the region’s industrial and mining heritage. This lower-altitude alternative works well when high ridges are unsafe.
Sample itineraries
One day from Petroșani: confirm cableway or road access, take a moderate route near the resort, and return to town before evening. Keep a lower valley option for poor weather.
Two days from Rânca: spend one day on a short walk and viewpoints, then reserve a second day for a longer route only if the weather, transport and your experience allow. Do not plan a summit on a day with storms, fog or lingering snow.
Three days: choose one gateway as your base, enjoy two mountain outings, and use the remaining day for the Jiu Valley or a separate Transalpina drive when the road is open. Crossing between gateways is a logistical journey; do not assume a through-hike has easy transport at both ends.
Seasons and mountain safety
Late spring to early autumn is the most practical period for high hikes, but snow patches and storms can persist. Winter mountaineering needs appropriate equipment and experience. Start early, check the mountain forecast, carry layers, water, food, map and headlamp, and tell someone your plan. Stay on marked paths, avoid approaching livestock dogs, leave no rubbish and use only permitted overnight areas. In an emergency call 112 and consult Salvamont Romania for mountain safety advice.
Where to sleep and eat
Petroșani offers shops, restaurants and more year-round services. The Parâng resort and Rânca have guesthouses close to trail starts, but availability and meal service vary by season. Reserve ahead for weekends and winter holidays, ask your host about current access, and carry provisions for remote trail days.
