Vrancea’s Panciu and Odobești vineyards form a memorable wine-country route through the sunlit foothills east of the Curvature Carpathians. This guide links the historic wine town of Odobești with the villages and cellar stops around Jariștea, Țifești and Panciu, with practical advice for arranging tastings, travelling safely and making a relaxed one- or two-day visit. Winery visits are private experiences and must be confirmed directly before you travel.

Why visit Vrancea wine country?
Vrancea is known as Romania’s “Land of Vine and Wine.” The county tourism board describes more than 27,000 hectares of vineyards across the county, while Panciu, Odobești and Cotești are its three principal vineyard areas. The wine route follows the foothill landscape parallel to the national road network and connects wineries, local producers and small towns. Rather than one formal, continuously signed trail with guaranteed open doors, think of it as a regional itinerary: choose appointments, allow time between stops and check current access with each producer.
The Panciu vineyard lies in the piedmont between the Trotuș and Putna valleys. The Odobești vineyard occupies the neighbouring belt between the Putna and Milcov valleys, with Odobești town as its central wine hub. The two regions share a long viticultural tradition, but a visit is as much about the rolling hills, cellar heritage and local food as it is about tasting.
What to taste
Odobești is particularly associated with local grapes such as Galbenă de Odobești, Șarba and Plăvaie, alongside Fetească albă, Fetească regală, Aligoté and other familiar varieties. The county’s Panciu vineyard is known for traditional local grapes and for sparkling wines; producers also grow international varieties. Ask the host what is currently bottled and what is distinctive about that year’s harvest. Small-producer availability changes, and a variety’s presence on a regional list does not guarantee that every winery has it available for tasting.
For a useful tasting, compare wines by grape, style and producer rather than trying to visit as many cellars as possible. A guided tasting is a good way to learn how local soils, slope, exposure and cellar methods affect the wine. If you are driving, choose a designated driver who does not drink, or arrange a taxi or private transfer before the first tasting.
Odobești: the historic vineyard centre
Start in Odobești, around 12 kilometres north-west of Focșani. The town is the principal centre of the Odobești vineyard, whose documentary history is recorded from the seventeenth century. A local tourism guide notes that the town grew alongside the expansion of grape-growing and the trade in regional wines. Its cellar heritage includes the historic Beciul Domnesc (Royal Cellar), listed by Vrancea County Council as a sixteenth-century monument and privately owned by VINCON. Do not assume it is open as a walk-in attraction: contact the operator in advance to ask whether tours or tastings are available on your date.
In town, allow time for a relaxed walk, a meal and a visit to the cellar or a local producer if booked. The wider landscape is spread across vineyard villages and roads, so a car or a pre-arranged driver is usually more practical than trying to walk between wineries. The county council’s route continues from Focșani through Odobești, Țifești and Panciu.
Jariștea and the Șarba hillside
From Odobești, continue towards Jariștea and Vărsătura for the Șarba wine-growing area. Crama Șarba is a local producer set among vineyards on Plaiul Șarba; its winery profile describes plantings of more than 150 hectares and highlights Șarba, Galbenă de Odobești and Plăvaie. The cellar lists contact details and recommends contacting it directly to plan a visit. Check the winery’s own website for current tour arrangements, prices, opening days and tasting availability.
This is a good place to slow down and understand the landscape: vineyard rows follow the sunny slopes, while villages and small roads connect the estates. Keep to public roads and signed visitor areas; working vineyards and winery grounds are private property.
Țifești and Panciu
Continue north-west to Țifești and the Panciu vineyard. Domeniile Panciu Winery & Resort is in the village of Sârbi, in Țifești, and presents itself as a winery and hospitality complex. Its official site describes accommodation and food facilities, but tasting tours and access should still be booked directly. Panciu’s wine identity includes sparkling wine as well as still wines, and the area’s historic cellar heritage includes the eighteenth-century Beciul Domnesc Panciu, also listed by the county council as privately owned.
Keep expectations flexible: winery operations, ownership, visitor schedules and cellar access can change. A historical building is not automatically open to the public, and a resort’s rooms or restaurant may operate on a different schedule from its wine tours. Confirm each element with the venue before setting off.
Suggested itinerary
One day: Odobești and Jariștea
- Morning: Leave Focșani for Odobești. Visit the town and, if arranged ahead, the Beciul Domnesc or a local winery.
- Lunch: Have a meal in Odobești or a nearby village. Confirm restaurant hours rather than relying on a tasting venue to provide food.
- Afternoon: Continue to Jariștea and Crama Șarba or another winery with a confirmed appointment. Finish with a pre-arranged return to Focșani.
One tasting appointment plus a town visit is a comfortable day. Add a second cellar only if the hosts confirm times and transport works without rushing.
Two days: the full vineyard corridor
- Day one: Explore Odobești and Jariștea, with one booked cellar visit and overnight accommodation in Focșani, Odobești or a winery that confirms lodging.
- Day two: Travel through Țifești to Domeniile Panciu or another confirmed Panciu-area venue. Visit the cellar by appointment, have lunch and return to Focșani or continue towards your next destination.
If you have an additional day, ask the local tourism office about Cotești and the wider Vrancea Vineyards Road. The official county route includes other vineyard towns, and Visit Vrancea highlights Crama Pandora, Hanul lui Ureche and Crama Gîrboiu on its wine-road experience. Some of those stops lie outside the Panciu–Odobești corridor, so plan them as a separate extension.
How to get around
Focșani is the most practical transport base, with the vineyard towns reached by road. Driving gives the greatest flexibility, but it is a poor choice for anyone planning to taste wine. Arrange a designated driver, licensed taxi, private transfer or an overnight stay before the visit; do not drive after drinking. Ask each winery whether it can recommend local transport, but confirm availability and cost yourself.
Regional buses and trains may serve some towns, but winery entrances are often outside town centres and services can be infrequent. Check live timetables for the exact date and arrange the last-mile transfer in advance. Do not plan a tasting around an unverified bus departure. Distances on a map look short, but country roads, vineyard lanes and appointment times make a deliberately unhurried schedule more enjoyable.
Booking, etiquette and accessibility
- Contact wineries directly several days ahead, especially for weekends, harvest season and groups.
- Ask what the visit includes: cellar tour, tasting, food, duration, language, price, payment method and cancellation policy.
- Tell the host about mobility needs, allergies or dietary requirements when booking; cellar stairs and vineyard surfaces may be uneven.
- Arrive on time and follow staff instructions in production areas. Do not enter vineyards, cellars or private buildings without permission.
- Bring water and eat before a tasting. Spitting is normal at professional tastings; modest pours help you compare more carefully.
- Buy directly from the producer if you find a bottle you enjoy, and ask about safe transport or shipping home.
When to go
Late spring through early autumn offers green vineyard views and the most comfortable conditions for touring. Harvest time brings activity to the region but can also make winery staff busy; book well ahead and expect some areas to be closed to visitors for safety. Autumn colour and harvest events vary by year and weather. Summer afternoons can be hot, so schedule outdoor walks earlier in the day and carry water. Check the forecast and road conditions before travel.
Where to stay and what to eat
Focșani offers the widest choice of accommodation and restaurants and works well if you want to return to the same base each evening. Odobești and Panciu provide a quieter stay closer to the vineyards, while some wineries advertise their own hospitality facilities. Verify the exact room, meal and booking arrangements with the provider; an estate may have limited availability or host private events. Pair a tasting with local dishes where possible, but check menus and opening hours in advance.
Responsible wine tourism
Wine country is a working agricultural landscape. Respect private land, leave gates as you found them, avoid disturbing farm work and take all rubbish with you. Keep noise low in villages and ask before photographing workers or private property. Enjoy tastings responsibly and never drive after drinking. If you do not drink alcohol, vineyard scenery, regional cuisine and cellar history can still make an excellent trip.
