Ocnele Mari Salt Mine travel guide: underground chambers, tickets and visiting from Vâlcea

Salina Ocnele Mari offers a different kind of Vâlcea outing: large underground salt chambers adapted for visitors, with places to pause and activities to try. Treat it as a planned half-day excursion, leaving time for the transport into the mine and the return journey.

What makes the visit interesting?

The scale of the excavated rooms and the patterns in the walls are worth taking time to notice. Begin with a walk through the visitor areas before deciding whether to add an activity. The operator lists sports and play spaces, a museum and an underground church. Some leisure activities have separate charges; check what is available that day. Official visitor information.

Salt extraction is part of the wider town’s history, with evidence reaching back to prehistoric periods and archaeological remains associated with Dacian Buridava. The municipal account also describes the succession of older mines and the development of the modern visitor area. This gives the trip context beyond the leisure facilities. Local historical account.

How entry works

SALROM describes bus transport from the surface into the mine, normally at 30-minute intervals, with about 10 minutes travelling underground. The stated temperature is approximately 13–15°C. Bring an extra layer and comfortable shoes, even when the weather outside is warm. Operator’s access information.

Allow a margin for queues, boarding and the journey back up. Arriving at the last entry time gives you little flexibility, especially if your group wants to explore at different speeds. Before going, check arrangements for wheelchairs, pushchairs or anyone who needs help boarding the transport. Ask about the complete journey from the surface to the visitor area.

Admission and parking

The published standard daily prices are 60 lei for adults, 40 lei for children and pupils, 50 lei for students up to 26 and 45 lei for seniors aged 65+. Children under three are listed as free. Standard car parking is 15 lei per day. Check eligibility and required documents when buying. Current tariffs and ticket rules.

Tickets allow one entry per day. Pets are prohibited. Before travelling with a child under three, ask the operator about its entry conditions. Organised groups should notify the operator ahead of arrival. Discounted admission and optional activities are separate parts of the budget.

Opening hours: October 2026

The date-specific operator notice gives the following schedule. It should not be treated as a year-round timetable. Official October notice, published 17 September 2026.

  • 1–18 October: closed Monday and Tuesday; Wednesday–Friday 10:00–16:00, last underground entry 14:30; Saturday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last entry 15:30.
  • 19 October–1 November: Monday–Friday 10:00–16:00, last entry 14:30; Saturday–Sunday 09:00–17:00, last entry 15:30.

The same notice lists the wine cellar as closed and different weekday and weekend arrangements for the self-service food line. If a meal is essential to your plan, check food service separately from the mine’s opening hours. For later travel dates, consult the newest notice rather than reusing October’s times.

Getting there and useful contacts

The operator’s address is Strada Pinilor 65, Ocnele Mari, with telephone 0250 733 402 and email valcea@salrom.ro. Ask for the visitor entrance and parking directions when arranging your visit. Visitor address and contact details.

For a regional base, see our Râmnicu Vâlcea guide. From Băile Govora, the council’s directions use DJ649 towards Râmnicu Vâlcea and then DN67 towards Ocnele Mari. Confirm onward public transport and the return connection before setting out without a car. A taxi arrangement should include the pickup point and expected return time.

Plan a comfortable half-day

Arrive early in the confirmed opening period, enter with the authorised transport and take a first circuit of the public areas. Then choose a paid activity or a quiet break according to your interests. Keep track of the return arrangements and leave time for lunch outside if on-site service is limited. Follow staff directions and keep children with your group.

Combine the mine with a gentle city afternoon rather than a tightly timed sequence of distant stops. For a spa-focused trip, devote another day to Călimănești-Căciulata. This keeps the underground visit enjoyable without having to rush back to meet a long onward journey.
