Maramureș’s wooden churches rise above village lanes with steep shingled roofs, narrow proportions and remarkably tall bell towers. Built by local craftspeople for working communities, these small structures bring together Orthodox traditions, Gothic influence and generations of timber skill. UNESCO’s serial property includes eight churches spread across the county, so visiting them is a road journey through valleys and villages rather than a single walkable circuit. A thoughtful itinerary gives time for the buildings, painted interiors and the living communities around them.

Plan the route by clusters

Baia Mare is a convenient arrival point and a good base for the southern group. Sighetu Marmației works well for the northern villages, while guesthouses in the valleys let you travel more slowly. A car is the easiest way to connect the churches; public transport serves larger settlements but may not line up with a multi-site day. Roads range from main routes to narrow rural lanes, so check current conditions and allow more time than a straight-line map suggests.

The eight UNESCO churches

  • Șurdești: the Church of the Holy Archangels is known for its exceptionally tall, slender tower and high timber silhouette. UNESCO describes the church as an outstanding expression of vernacular religious architecture.
  • Plopiș: a compact church in the southern cluster, rewarding visitors interested in the proportions and joinery of timber construction.
  • Rogoz: in the Lăpuș area, its carved details and distinctive roof make it a strong addition to a longer county route.
  • Bârsana: the historic wooden church stands in the village landscape; distinguish it from the newer, much-photographed monastic complex elsewhere in the commune.
  • Budești: the Church of Saint Nicholas is among the county’s best-known historic wooden churches, set within a traditional village context.
  • Desești: the Church of Saint Parascheva combines a tall timber structure with valuable interior painting.
  • Poienile Izei: a remote-feeling village church where the setting is part of the experience; check access before making the drive.
  • Ieud Deal: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin sits above the village and is an important stop in the Iza Valley landscape.

Suggested two- or three-day itinerary

Day one — southern Maramureș: start from Baia Mare and visit Șurdești and Plopiș, then continue toward Rogoz if opening arrangements and daylight allow. Consider an overnight in the Lăpuș or Baia Mare area rather than racing across the county.

Day two — Iza Valley: travel toward Bârsana, then group Budești and Desești with a night near Sighetu Marmației or in a village guesthouse. Day three — upper valley: visit Poienile Izei and Ieud Deal, adding time for village walks and local heritage. Reorder the stops to match accommodation and current road conditions; the route is not a fixed sequence.

Visiting respectfully

These are active churches, not simply monuments. Wear modest clothing, speak quietly, follow local instructions and never enter a service area or restricted space. The church may be closed when you arrive; some sites rely on a local custodian, so use posted contact details or ask locally rather than assuming regular museum hours. Photography inside can be restricted, especially during services. Ask permission before photographing people, icons or worshippers, and do not use flash where it is prohibited.

What makes the architecture special

Look at how the timber walls are assembled, how the shingled roofs protect the structure and how the tower rises above the western end. UNESCO highlights the range of designs and craftsmanship across the eight buildings, including Orthodox religious traditions shaped by Gothic influences and local building practice. Many other wooden churches survive in Maramureș; they are culturally valuable, but not every one belongs to the UNESCO serial property.
