Letea Forest travel guide: horses, protected woodland and planning a full-day excursion

Letea is one of the Danube Delta’s most distinctive landscapes: old woodland, sandy ground and free-roaming horses, reached as part of a journey through the northern Delta. A visit usually means more than a boat ride. Allow for the village stop, local transport and time on the authorised visitor route, and choose an itinerary that gives the landscape room to make sense.

What makes Letea different?

Tulcea County Council describes centuries-old oaks, climbing vegetation, dunes and feral horses. It records protection from 1938 and distinguishes a substantial strictly protected area within the wider forest landscape. Ask your guide to explain the habitats, rather than treating the visit only as a search for horses.

Horses can be part of the experience, but their location and visibility are not guaranteed. Watch from a distance and follow the guide’s instructions; do not feed, chase or approach them for photographs. Keep to the agreed route and leave plants and sandy ground undisturbed. A tourism excursion does not mean unrestricted access to strictly protected areas.

Choose a starting point

The county council describes a water approach from Tulcea via the Sulina branch and Madgearu channel, as well as a land approach from Sulina’s Prospect area through Cardon towards C.A. Rosetti. These are route descriptions, not a current public transport timetable. Confirm the complete journey and return with an operator before travelling.

If you already stay at Sulina or another Delta base, ask about an outing starting there before committing to a long transfer back to Tulcea. Tell the operator the exact location of your accommodation: a package departing Tulcea may not collect you from a village on its route.

Understand a full-day tour from Tulcea

Descoperă Delta Dunării’s 2026 group programme advertises 320 lei per person, including the boat excursion, local safari vehicle, Romanian-language guiding and reserve visit charges. Lunch is listed separately at 100 lei per person. The programme sets a minimum age of five and charges children the full boat-seat price.

Its listed group season ends in September, so those details do not establish availability for an October or winter trip. The page describes a 07:45 meeting and 08:00 departure from Tulcea Port Aval, with return around 19:00. Reserve the whole day and confirm the actual schedule; do not arrange a tight onward connection based on the shorter headline duration.

Compare private trips carefully

The same operator’s private Letea programme lists 2,500 lei per boat for one to five people and 2,700 lei for six to eleven. Guiding in Romanian, the boat and reserve visit charges are included; lunch and the local vehicle transfer are extra. Ask for a complete quotation, particularly the land-transfer cost for your group size.

Both advertised prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and belong to that operator, rather than being general admission charges. Confirm your date, guiding language, inclusions and cancellation terms before paying. If travelling with children or someone with mobility needs, discuss boat boarding, vehicle seating and the amount of walking first.

Prepare for open boats and village time

The operator describes uncovered boats, so pack for sun, wind and rain: long sleeves, a sun hat, sunglasses, a jacket and a rain layer are useful. Wear shoes suitable for uneven or sandy ground and carry drinking water. Confirm suitable life jackets and keep one on during the boat journey.

Leave time for the village rather than rushing directly from boat to vehicle. Ask before photographing residents, stay outside private gardens and discuss dietary requirements before any household meal. A stop at Mila 23 on a tour should not be assumed to include a separately booked museum visit.

Use our Danube Delta planning guide for the broader reserve and permit arrangements, and our Caraorman Forest guide if comparing woodland excursions. Choose the trip whose confirmed route and pace match your interests.
