Grădina Zmeilor: a walk among Sălaj’s sandstone formations
Grădina Zmeilor, often translated as the Dragons’ Garden, is a compact landscape stop near Jibou. Come for the rock shapes and the surrounding countryside, with enough time to walk slowly and notice how the formations change when viewed from different positions. A visit here fits best into a county journey with flexible transport.

Rocks with geological and legendary stories
The Zalău tourism centre describes a protected geological reserve of approximately three hectares near Gâlgău Almașului, in Bălan commune. Its formations developed in weakly cemented Sânmihai sandstone: blocks detached and moved above underlying clay, while weathering, water and gravity continued to shape them.
The same source lists names such as Zmeul și Zmeoaica and Călugării, reflecting the characters people have imagined in the stones. Its local legends describe dragons turned to stone and a young woman transformed by a curse. Read those as folklore accompanying the landscape; the geological explanation tells a different kind of story.
You do not need to identify every named rock to enjoy the place. Look at the layers, silhouettes and vegetation around the formations. The photograph above is useful for recognising the setting, but an older image cannot establish the condition of today’s paths or every surviving feature.
Planning a short nature walk
The tourism centre describes two routes starting near the first reserve information board and using part of the gravel approach from the parking area. Follow the information and any closures posted when you arrive. This guide does not prescribe an unverified loop, distance or difficulty grade.
As an editorial planning allowance, set aside about one to two hours for an unhurried visit, including the approach, photographs and your return to the vehicle. Your own route, pace and conditions may make it shorter or longer. Leave a generous margin if you have a booked activity afterwards.
Wear shoes with grip and check recent rain as well as the day’s forecast. Assess the ground as you go; a short outing can still involve uneven or slippery sections. Keep children close where the terrain demands attention, and use permitted viewpoints rather than climbing formations for a photograph.
Bring water and take litter away with you. Keep to the visitor route and respect signs restricting access: protecting the site also helps preserve the landscape that people come to see. If you need a step-free route or particular mobility support, ask for current information before travelling rather than assuming the parking approach provides access to every viewpoint.
Finding the reserve and checking the practical details
Plan for Gâlgău Almașului in Sălaj, rather than confusing it with another village named Gâlgău. Check the final approach on a current map and follow local signs. Allow time to locate the visitor entrance and parking arrangements when you arrive.
A car or an arranged transfer makes combining countryside stops easier. If using public transport, confirm a service to the correct village, the remaining walk and the return connection separately. A train to Jibou does not itself establish an onward service to the reserve.
The official tourism description used for this guide does not publish a current entrance tariff or fixed daily opening schedule. Do not interpret that as a guarantee of free admission or unrestricted access. For up-to-date route conditions and visitor arrangements, contact the Zalău tourist information centre before setting out.
A garden and geology day around Jibou
Jibou Botanical Garden provides a contrasting visit, with cultivated grounds and glasshouse collections. If combining the two, work backwards from the botanical garden’s indoor closing time and leave space for a meal and the transfer. The suggested combination is a planning idea, not an organised tour.
Zalău is another useful base for exploring Sălaj. Choose your next stop from the Romania destinations directory and group places geographically, while allowing each visit enough time.
