Sălaj County · City and regional heritage
Zalău
A historic centre, a county museum and the hills beyond the rooftops give Zalău a useful place in a north-western Romania itinerary. Spend time in the city before using it as a base for Sălaj’s archaeology and countryside.

Start around Piața Iuliu Maniu
The Transilvania Building provides an architectural starting point in the old centre. The local tourism centre describes an eclectic building whose historic ballroom and theatre space was decorated in Secession style. It has accommodated many different uses over time and remains a building with several occupants. An exterior walk and an arranged interior visit should therefore be treated as different plans. Look at the façade slowly, then ask the tourist information centre about any public access to the former ballroom for your date. The centre is listed at Piața Iuliu Maniu, nos. 4–6, so it is also a practical place to obtain a map and check regional visitor arrangements.
The square’s Wesselényi sculptural group is another stop with a specific story. Created by János Fadrusz and inaugurated in 1902, it depicts Miklós Wesselényi and the Romanian peasant Pop Samson. The municipal tourism account connects the scene with the abolition of serfdom. Read it as a commemorative monument with a historical viewpoint, alongside the architecture around it. History and art at separate addresses
The Vasile Lucăcel history section of the County Museum of History and Art is at Strada Unirii, no. 9. It makes a useful first stop before an archaeological excursion: ask which permanent and temporary displays are available when you arrive. Use the museum’s own website for exhibitions and current announcements.
The Ioan Sima art gallery is a separate visit at Strada Gheorghe Doja, no. 6. The local tourism account describes a gallery established in 1981 around works and personal objects donated by the artist. Choose it if you want a closer encounter with painting rather than fitting both museum locations into a rushed hour. Source: local tourism centre.
Check the weekend rotation. The museum’s dedicated visitor page currently lists both sections open Tuesday–Friday, 09:00–17:00. On Saturday and Sunday, only one of the two opens, by rotation, also 09:00–17:00; last entry is 16:30. Monday is closed. A general footer elsewhere lists Tuesday–Sunday without that distinction, so use the dedicated programme and ask which section is open on your chosen weekend. Source: museum visitor programme.
For confirmation, the museum lists +40 260 612 223 and contact@muzeuzalau.ro. Ask about the current tariff, special closures and any accessibility requirements. One museum name does not imply one entrance or a single ticket covering every location.
An unhurried city day
Our suggested sequence starts with the old centre and Transilvania Building, follows with the museum section open that day, and leaves time for lunch and a return walk through the centre. Allow roughly half a day for that combination; this is a planning suggestion, not an official guided route or a promise about exhibit duration.
With another day, consider Porolissum near Moigrad. It is a separate outdoor archaeological excursion rather than a city-centre attraction. Visit the county museum first for background, then check the site’s current access and transport before leaving Zalău. Keep an alternative city plan if weather makes an exposed outdoor visit unattractive.
Plan your arrival and regional trips
When booking accommodation, compare its exact address with the museum or centre you intend to visit. A room in Zalău can serve a city break or a wider Sălaj journey, but the most useful location depends on whether you are walking, using public transport or setting out by car.
For onward excursions, verify the actual service and return journey for your travel date. The city’s transport operator and national rail booking service publish their own information: consult Transurbis for local transport and CFR Călători for trains. Do not assume a city bus continues to a rural archaeological entrance.
The tourist information centre lists +40 360 566 100, +40 732 430 510 and office.turismzalau@gmail.com. Ask for opening hours, a city map and the latest practical details for regional stops. Source: tourist information contact page.
