Fildu de Sus Wooden Church: a tall spire above the village

The wooden church at Fildu de Sus is a rewarding stop for travellers interested in village architecture and painted religious interiors. Its slender spire makes an immediate impression, but an arranged interior visit can add another dimension. Contact the local team before making a special journey and allow time for the approach through the village.

Timber craftsmanship and a distinctive silhouette

The Zalău tourism centre dates the church to 1727 and identifies its dedication as Pogorârea Sfântului Duh, the Descent of the Holy Spirit. It stands on Dealul Țolii on a stone foundation. The source highlights the pointed shingled spire and ornamented porch as important features of the building.

The doorway carries an inscription naming the craftsmen and the year 1727. Look at the carved entrance and porch details from the areas you are permitted to use. Rather than judging the building only by the height of its tower, notice the relationship between the low timber body and the exceptionally slender upper silhouette.

Why an interior visit is worth arranging

The tourism centre dates the mural painting to 1856, with purple-red tones and floral motifs prominent in its description. It highlights scenes from the life and Passion of Christ, the iconostasis and an image of the devil sowing weeds. Ask the person accompanying your visit to help explain the painted programme.

Pause before moving from one scene to another. A short introduction to where the paintings sit within the church can be more useful than trying to identify every figure immediately. If photography is allowed, follow any restrictions on flash and equipment and avoid touching painted surfaces or carved timber.

The same tourism description notes a very low entrance. Watch your head when entering and ask about thresholds and available assistance if you have mobility needs. A modest doorway is part of the historic building’s scale, but it also matters to the practical experience of a visit.

Arrange access before travelling

The tourism page checked for this guide does not publish a regular visitor timetable, current admission charge or dedicated booking number for the church. Do not assume that the interior will be open whenever you arrive in the village. Ask the tourist information centre how to contact the parish or local keyholder and agree a time.

The Zalău tourist information centre publishes +40 360 566 100 and office.turismzalau@gmail.com. This is an information contact rather than a church reservation line. Ask specifically about Fildu de Sus and the historic wooden church.

For a group, confirm the number of visitors, language, meeting point and any charge in advance. Dress respectfully and avoid interrupting worship or other parish activity. Leave room for an explanation from the host instead of scheduling the stop down to the last minute.

Make the village approach part of the plan

Use Fildu de Sus in Sălaj as your destination and check the final approach to the historic church separately. Fildu de Jos and Fildu de Sus are different places; arrival in the wider area does not mean you have reached this building.

Allow around 45–60 minutes at the church as an editorial suggestion, including the approach and an arranged interior visit. Add your actual travelling time, and leave more time if your host offers a longer explanation. For public transport, check the precise village stop, remaining walk and return service before committing to the trip.

Comfortable shoes and a forecast check are sensible for a village heritage outing. The winter image above shows the church’s setting in one past season, not today’s access conditions. If the final route involves steps or uneven ground, discuss suitability with your local contact before setting out.
