The Cindrel Mountains rise south-west of Sibiu into a high, open landscape of rounded summits, alpine meadows, shepherding country and glacial lakes. The resort of Păltiniș is the easiest base for a first visit, while Rășinari, Sibiel and the villages of Mărginimea Sibiului offer a gentler cultural start. The range’s highest point, Cindrel Peak (2,244 m), rewards a full mountain day and careful planning.

Where to begin
The Cindrel range is in Sibiu County, immediately south-west of Sibiu city. Păltiniș, at roughly 1,450 m, is the main mountain resort and a practical trailhead; it is reached by road from Sibiu. Check local transport timetables before relying on a bus, especially outside weekends and the main holiday season. A car gives flexibility for village trailheads, but mountain roads can be affected by snow, storms or maintenance. The Sibiu County tourism board lists route starts around Păltiniș as well as Cisnădie, Cisnădioara, Sadu, Râu Sadului, Rășinari and Sibiel.
What to see and do
- Păltiniș: walk among the resort’s forest-edge paths, enjoy broad views and use it as the launch point for longer hikes. The setting is high and exposed; even summer evenings can feel cold.
- Cindrel Peak: at 2,244 m, it is the range’s highest summit. The approach from Păltiniș is a demanding full-day outing, not a casual stroll. Carry a map, check the marked route and allow enough daylight for the return.
- Iezerul Mare and Iezerul Mic: glacial lakes sit in the high mountain basin and make rewarding objectives for fit hikers. Expect a long day and changing weather above the treeline.
- Village landscapes: Rășinari and Sibiel connect mountain scenery with the pastoral heritage of Mărginimea Sibiului. Explore on foot, visit local museums or arrange a meal with a guesthouse.
- Winter recreation: Păltiniș has seasonal snow sports and winter walking opportunities. Confirm lift and slope operations locally; conditions and opening dates vary.
Plan a realistic itinerary
One day: drive or take confirmed transport to Păltiniș, choose a short waymarked walk suited to the weather, and return to Sibiu or stay overnight. Add a village stop in Rășinari if time allows.
Two days: spend day one on a moderate trail near Păltiniș and day two on a longer route toward the high ridges or a lake, only if forecast and fitness are suitable. Start early, share your route with someone and keep a lower alternative in mind.
Three days: combine a high mountain walk with village visits in Mărginimea Sibiului and a relaxed day in Sibiu. This avoids trying to compress a strenuous summit hike and cultural stops into one schedule.
Season, safety and responsible travel
Late spring through early autumn is the usual hiking season, but snow can linger on high ground and thunderstorms can build quickly in summer. Autumn brings clear days and shorter daylight. Winter travel needs proper layers, traction and experience; do not assume summer markings or access remain suitable. Follow the county tourism board’s route notes and any local restrictions. Carry water, food, a charged phone, offline mapping, a headlamp and weatherproof layers. Keep to marked trails, avoid disturbing grazing animals, close gates, pack out rubbish and do not light fires. In an emergency in Romania call 112; for mountain rescue information consult Salvamont.
Where to stay and eat
Păltiniș has hotels and guesthouses close to the mountain, while Sibiu offers the broadest range of accommodation, restaurants and onward transport. Rășinari and nearby villages suit visitors seeking rural guesthouses and regional food. Book ahead for weekends and winter holidays, confirm meals and check whether your lodging can advise on current trail or road conditions.
