Caraș Gorge: Limestone River Walks, Carașova and the Route Towards Comarnic
Discover the wooded limestone valley of the Caraș River from a carefully chosen marked route. Combine a gorge walk with Carașova’s cultural setting, while keeping the longer journey towards Comarnic separate from a casual riverside outing.

Follow a river through a limestone landscape
Caraș Gorge belongs to Semenic–Cheile Carașului National Park. The park describes a river that has eroded Jurassic and Cretaceous limestone, leaving cliffs, rocky slopes and a winding channel. Walking gives a closer view of this relationship than a road journey: the water, trees and limestone walls gradually change around each bend.
Begin with a route that suits your experience rather than trying to cover the gorge’s entire extent. A short section from the Carașova side can form a focused visit, while a longer route needs more time and logistics. Cave openings and rocky side features are part of the landscape, not invitations to leave the marked path.

Use current route information and a turnaround point
The park identifies a blue-triangle route from Carașova towards Comarnic through the Poiana Prolaz area. Its route summary and older attraction description give different overall distances, so use the current map and ask about the exact segment you intend to walk. Do not combine numbers from different route versions into a single guaranteed schedule.
Check river levels, trail condition and daylight before departure. Narrow sections, wet ground and rocky surfaces deserve proper walking footwear and attention. Carry water and an offline map, and return early if the path is unsuitable for your group. Keep children close where the trail approaches a drop, and use a guide when your experience does not match the route.
Arrive at a defined trailhead in Carașova
Carașova is the practical reference point for the village-side approach. Confirm the current start and parking arrangements with the park or local accommodation, then navigate to that specific place. Reșița can provide a broader transport and accommodation base, but the final journey to the gorge still needs to be planned.
A one-way walk towards Comarnic requires an agreed collection or a fully understood return route. Do not assume that reaching the cave area gives access to a frequent bus back to Carașova. If travelling without a car, arrange the last-mile transfer and its return time before leaving your main transport connection.
Combine the gorge with Carașova’s cultural setting
Choose one confirmed riverside section, walk at a pace that leaves time to enjoy the views and turn back with daylight to spare. A full onward journey towards Comarnic should replace this simpler outing rather than be added spontaneously. Any cave visit also needs its own access and guiding arrangements.
The park introduced a thematic trail about the history and traditions of the Croatian community in the Caraș valley in 2026, listing ten interpretation panels over 1.5 kilometres. Ask where this route currently begins and how it fits your day. It offers a useful cultural complement without treating the living village as merely a gateway to scenery.
Base the trip around your chosen walking day
Accommodation in Reșița offers city services, while a rural stay near Carașova can reduce the morning transfer. Compare actual access, meal arrangements and the help available with local transport. Pack lunch and water in advance rather than expecting refreshments at every point along the gorge.
For a longer stay, give the Semenic plateau and Caraș Gorge separate days. They have different terrain and access needs, even though both belong to the same national park. When booking a guide, confirm the intended start, endpoint, walking difficulty and weather alternative so that the visit matches your group’s abilities.
