Zimnicea and the Danube: river outings, archaeological heritage and checking the Svishtov ferry

Zimnicea suits a slower journey through southern Teleorman: a town stop, a look at the Danube and, when confirmed, a boat outing. Make the river the focus of your plans, while treating sightseeing cruises and the international ferry as separate services. A timetable printed online does not guarantee that either will operate on your date.

A town above the river

The municipality’s January 2025 development-strategy documentation places Zimnicea on the Danube floodplain at the Bulgarian border, around 40 km from Alexandria. It identifies road connections via DN51 towards Alexandria, DN51C towards Turnu Măgurele and DN5C towards Giurgiu. Its geographical account places the town about 3 km from the Danube: allow for a separate journey to the waterfront.

The same document describes the town’s development as a port and customs point and its reconstruction after the 1977 earthquake. It also identifies river recreation as part of local tourism, while distinguishing existing amenities from proposed improvements. References to a future promenade or floating waterfront should therefore not be treated as proof of a completed visitor route.

Book a Valul Dunărean outing

The municipality publishes a dedicated Valul Dunărean passenger-boat information page. It describes leisure trips from a specially arranged pontoon in Zimnicea Port, dependent on favourable weather. The advertised framework for ticketed outings is Friday–Sunday between April and October, with actual departures arranged through the provider and enquiries or reservations required.

The page gives an operating window of 09:30–20:00 and lists 24 lei per person or 258.62 lei per cruising hour for personalised services. These figures and the operating window are published information, rather than a confirmed departure or quotation for your particular trip. Ask which tariff applies, the duration, passenger minimum, boarding time and cancellation arrangements before paying or travelling.

For information and reservations, the published numbers are +40 247 366 431 and +40 766 510 682. Confirm whether your group needs a ticketed departure or a separately arranged outing. If boarding steps, balance or limited mobility are concerns, discuss assistance and the pontoon directly with the provider.

Check the Svishtov ferry before setting off

When checked on 5 October 2026, the Svishtov–Zimnicea ferry operator’s Romanian page displayed a notice that crossings were temporarily suspended because of low Danube water levels. The page also retained a summer timetable. Give the suspension notice priority over that timetable and obtain direct confirmation that services have resumed before planning a crossing.

The operator publishes +40 747 104 225, +359 882 667 566 and ferryboat@abv.bg. Ask about service on your date, the terminal approach, passenger or vehicle arrangements, current charges and the last return crossing. Keep an alternative route or overnight plan available if your journey depends on reaching the opposite bank.

Understand the archaeological heritage

The National Archaeological Repertory records Zimnicea–Cetate on Strada Cetății, west of the present town and east of the Pasărea River. Its listed components include Bronze Age burial grounds, a La Tène settlement and burial mounds, and medieval occupation. This gives the area a long archaeological history, rather than the appearance of a single surviving castle.

The record is a heritage reference, not a visitor timetable. Establish whether there is a permitted, interpretable viewing area before going to the site; avoid entering excavations or private land. For an indoor introduction to the wider region, use our Teleorman County Museum guide when planning a separate stop in Alexandria.

Shape a realistic half-day

As a planning suggestion, leave time for a town walk, travel to an authorised river viewpoint and a booked outing if one is running. Arrange your return transport first. Bring water, sun protection and footwear for the conditions, and follow staff instructions around boarding areas. A view of the Danube can still make a worthwhile stop when a crossing is unavailable.

Combine Zimnicea with Turnu Măgurele or Alexandria according to your route and confirmed opening arrangements. Browse the Romania destinations directory for further stops.
