Zăbala and Zabola Estate: Mikes Heritage, Park Tours and Country Stays

Explore the Mikes family estate in Zăbala, known in Hungarian as Zabola. Its historic buildings and landscaped park offer a quieter side of Covasna, with day visits arranged in advance and accommodation spread across several estate houses.

The Mikes estate and its park

The estate remains a family home as well as a place welcoming visitors. Its roughly fifty-hectare castle park sits within a larger estate landscape, giving the experience a country-house scale rather than the layout of a single monument. A guided walk brings the buildings, planted grounds and family story together. Ask your guide how different parts of the estate were used over time.

The property was nationalised in 1949, and the family began restoring it in the early 2000s. Buildings now used for accommodation include the New Castle, Machine House and other former estate houses. The photographs show the historic residence; they do not imply that all rooms or private areas are included in a park tour. Follow the route agreed with your host.

Reserve your park visit

Contact +40 724 003 658 or reservations@zabola.com before travelling. The operator describes a guided walk lasting approximately one hour, with a minimum of two guests and coffee or tea at the start. Confirm the language, meeting point, group limit and price for your date. The tour programme and accommodation reception hours should not be read as unrestricted opening hours for the grounds.

Private events can limit visitor access. Ask whether your chosen date is suitable and obtain confirmation before building a day around the visit. Prices on different estate pages have varied, so request the current total rather than relying on an older listing. Mention children, mobility requirements or any need for a shorter route when you reserve.

Getting to Zăbala

Plan the approach to Zăbala as a village journey in Covasna County, and use the estate’s confirmed entrance as your destination. The regional tourism listing gives Strada Principală 437 for visits. Check this against your booking instructions, since accommodation buildings and event entrances can have separate meeting points. Leave enough time to arrive before your reserved tour.

For a car-free itinerary, settle the final transfer and return before leaving your base. A bus or train connection to a nearby town does not guarantee convenient access to the estate gates. Ask your accommodation or tour host about a local taxi, and confirm the pickup time if your visit continues into dinner. Keep transport arrangements separate from admission.

An estate visit and a nearby town

A simple first visit begins with the guided park walk. Afterwards, add a meal or another estate activity only when it has been booked and its availability confirmed. The operator lists riding, carriage outings and cycling among its experiences; ask about age limits, equipment, supervision and the routes involved before choosing one.

Pair a shorter visit with Covasna town or Târgu Secuiesc, giving each stop time rather than rushing through several private estates. An overnight plan leaves more space for the park and surrounding countryside. Stay within permitted areas and follow the host’s advice about wildlife. Animal sightings are unpredictable and should never be encouraged by approaching or feeding wildlife.

Choosing a country-house stay

Compare the individual accommodation descriptions before booking. A room in the New Castle, a former service building and a separate garden house offer different layouts and levels of privacy. Confirm bathroom facilities, stairs, meal arrangements and distances to shared facilities. A historic estate cannot be assumed to have the same accessibility in every building.

Build your stay around one or two confirmed experiences, with spare time for the countryside. Check cancellation terms and which meals, spa services or activities are included in the rate.
