Slănic Prahova: a salt-mine visit and a day above ground
Slănic Prahova is a rewarding destination for visitors interested in salt, geology and industrial heritage. Make the Unirea mine the main event, then add the town’s Salt Museum for a different perspective. Plan around the underground transport schedule and leave some unhurried time above ground.

What makes the Unirea mine memorable
The scale of the underground chambers is the strongest reason to visit. Stand back from a pillar and look upwards: the space makes the work of extracting salt much more tangible than a diagram alone. Take time to notice the walls, structural forms and contrast between the enormous excavation and the people moving through it.
Think of the experience as a visit to a former working landscape adapted for tourists. Look for interpretation that helps explain the mining process and ask staff about what you are seeing. The layout and activities can change, so avoid building your whole day around a particular attraction shown in an old photograph or review.
The operator describes minibus access to the Unirea mine at 208 metres below ground and a temperature of about 12–13°C. Bring a warm layer even on a hot day. Its listed play and sporting activities have separate charges; admission should not be read as an all-inclusive activity pass.
A quiet visit and a family activity visit can feel quite different. Decide what your party wants to do, allow for transfers and queues, and keep children with you in the large interior spaces. Follow the staff’s instructions about where visitors may go.
October 2026 opening arrangements
For 1–25 October 2026, the published schedule is Wednesday–Sunday, closed Monday–Tuesday. For 26 October–1 November it lists daily opening. First underground transport is 09:15, last entry transport 15:30 and last return transport 16:30. Check Salrom’s current notice for later dates and changes.
Listed day admission is 60 lei for adults, 40 lei for ages 3–18, 50 lei for eligible students up to 26 and 45 lei for seniors 65+. Bring proof for reductions. Pets are prohibited. Enquiries: +40 244 240 995 or +40 372 777 570; slanic@salrom.ro.
A last entry time is a deadline, not a suggested arrival time for a relaxed visit. Aim earlier, especially if you are travelling with a group, and ask about the boarding arrangements before joining a queue. Allow time for the return transfer when planning lunch, a museum visit or your journey home.
Choose online ticket providers through the links on the operator’s page and read the conditions for your selected date. Before arranging a group outing, contact the operator about party size, estimated arrival and transport capacity. Confirm the price and the services included before payment.
The Salt Museum in Casa Cămărășiei
The National Heritage Institute’s museum listing, updated in September 2026, places the Salt Museum at Strada 23 August 19, in the historic Casa Cămărășiei. It describes exhibits about salt extraction, processing and the mineral’s place in human life, together with the local natural environment.
The listing gives Tuesday–Sunday hours of 09:00–17:00 from October through April and 09:00–19:00 from May through September, with Monday closed. Telephone +40 244 240 961 before visiting to confirm admission, any temporary closures and the availability of interactive exhibits.
This museum is a separate above-ground visit. It can help you connect the mine’s huge spaces with the tools, processes and everyday importance of salt. The two attractions have different schedules: do not assume that an open museum means the mine is open, or that a mine ticket includes museum admission.
A practical day in Slănic
- Start with the confirmed mine visit. Arrive with time to organise admission and boarding. Keep a warm layer accessible.
- Explore without rushing. Enjoy the scale of the chambers and choose any paid activities that suit your group.
- Return above ground for a break. Leave space for the transfer and a meal rather than planning consecutive timed appointments.
- Add the Salt Museum. Visit if its opening hours fit your date, then allow a short town walk before departure.
In warmer months, some visitors also look for outdoor leisure facilities around Slănic. Treat a bathing or recreation stop as a separate seasonal booking: confirm the exact venue, operating dates and access before adding it. Ask local staff about permitted viewpoints and paths around salt formations rather than entering abandoned excavations or approaching unstable edges.
Getting there and choosing a stay
Enter Slănic Prahova as the full destination when planning transport. Check the final address with your accommodation or attraction, and allow a realistic margin between arrival in town and mine boarding. If using public transport, verify the current connection and the return journey for the same day; an old timetable may not reflect current services.
A day visit works best with a clear return plan. Staying overnight can give you more flexibility for a morning mine visit and a second local activity. Compare the location of your lodging with your intended stops, meal availability and parking or transfer arrangements.
The salina office lists Strada Salinei 1, but ask where visitors should report for tickets and transport on your date. Do the same for organised trips: a meeting point, mine entrance and office address may serve different purposes.
Comfort and access
If anyone in your party has limited mobility, ask the operator about the minibus, boarding steps, walking surfaces, toilets and assistance. A reduced admission category does not by itself establish step-free access. Describe your requirements before buying a ticket.
Check the arrangements for very young children directly with the operator, and plan a visit length suited to your family. Bring suitable clothing and follow the posted visitor rules. For photography beyond ordinary personal use, ask about permission and the applicable fee before organising equipment or a shoot.
Keep the day focused on experiences you have confirmed. Slănic’s mine and museum offer two complementary ways to understand salt heritage, and a manageable itinerary will give you more time to appreciate both.
Planning information checked in October 2026. Verify mine transport, opening dates, ticket conditions and museum availability shortly before travel.
