Siriu Lake: Reservoir Views, the Buzău Valley and a Practical Road Stop

Siriu Lake is a reservoir in the mountain section of the Buzău Valley, framed by wooded slopes and the infrastructure of its dam. Visit for the scenery from permitted stopping places, then plan any countryside walk or specialist activity separately.

Best for: mountain-valley scenery and photography
Allow: a planned scenic stop or an overnight valley stay
Access planning: check current DN10 traffic conditions

A reservoir within the mountain valley

Siriu is an artificial lake formed by damming the Buzău River, rather than a natural alpine lake. The water-management authority includes it in the Buzău basin’s reservoir system. Its appeal for travellers comes from the combination of water, forested slopes and the broad change in scenery as the road enters the mountains.

Observe the reservoir from places where stopping and pedestrian access are permitted. Water level and shoreline appearance can change with operating and weather conditions, so a photograph may show a different view from your visit. The dam is working infrastructure; do not assume technical areas or the crest are open as a tourist attraction.

Plan a viewpoint, not an improvised lakeside activity

Check current road conditions and locally permitted access before travelling. Identify a safe stopping place without obstructing traffic, and remain outside fenced or signed operational areas. A scenic water view does not mean that there is a developed beach, a continuous lakeside path or unrestricted access to every part of the shore.

Reservoirs can have changing depths, cold water and dangerous currents near hydraulic structures. Follow water-authority warnings and do not improvise swimming. Any boating, fishing or other activity needs separate confirmation from the relevant operator or authority; this guide does not imply that such services are available or permitted at a particular location.

The DN10 valley route

Plan the visit along the DN10 route between Buzău and the Brașov side of the mountains, checking current traffic information before departure. Roadworks, weather and incidents can change journey times. Leave additional time for a careful drive and use designated stopping places rather than pulling over abruptly for a photograph.

If travelling without a car, confirm where a scheduled service stops and how you can safely reach a permitted viewing area. Do not walk along a narrow roadside simply because the lake is visible nearby. An arranged transfer or guided route can be more practical when combining the stop with another attraction.

A measured scenic stop or a valley day

For a brief stop, choose a permitted viewpoint, enjoy the scenery and allow time to get safely back to your vehicle. Avoid adding a steep shore descent or a dam visit without confirmed access. A meal in an operating local venue can make the break more comfortable than a rushed roadside pause.

For a full day, add a separately researched walk or cultural stop suited to the weather and your ability. Mountain routes require their own map, conditions check and equipment; a reservoir visit is not preparation for an exposed summit hike. Leave daylight and driving time in reserve, especially outside the longer summer days.

Accommodation and onward travel

A stay in the wider Siriu valley can suit a slower mountain itinerary. Compare accommodation by its actual road location, meal options, parking and approach, asking about winter access or late arrival when relevant. Confirm whether an advertised lake view is from the property itself or from a separate nearby location.

For a longer trip, connect the valley with Buzău city or Brașov according to your route, giving the rural geopark sites separate travel time. Keep nature visits flexible around conditions and local advice. Enjoy the water-and-mountain landscape while respecting the reservoir’s operational role and the people who live along the valley.
