Paul Păltănea History Museum, Galați: Lapidarium, Cuza House and Visitor Guide

At a glance: The Paul Păltănea History Museum is a network of historic and exhibition sites in Galați, not a single building. Start with the Lapidarium for archaeology and the museum’s main interpretive displays, then add the Cuza Vodă House or Collections House if they are open. The museum lists a seasonal schedule: Wednesday–Sunday, 10:00–18:00 from April to October and 09:00–17:00 from November to March; Monday and Tuesday are generally closed. Check each site before you go.

What the museum includes

Founded in 1956, the county museum preserves more than 60,000 objects across its collections and branches. The network combines archaeology, local and regional history, numismatics, ethnography and historic houses. A single visit can be tightly focused on the central city sites or expanded into a longer trip around Galați County.

Lapidarium

The Lapidarium at Strada Maior Iancu Fotea 2 bis, opposite the Greek Church, is the best starting point for archaeology. Its exhibitions interpret finds from the Lower Danube and sites across Galați County, with displays on ancient settlements, traditional culture and archaeological fieldwork. Temporary exhibitions change, so check the museum’s news page for what is currently on view.

Cuza Vodă House

This historic house at Strada Alexandru Ioan Cuza 80 is associated with the family home of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, later the first ruler of the united Romanian principalities. The permanent displays connect Cuza’s life with Galați’s development as a commercial, economic and cultural centre in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Collections include numismatics, medals and philately. The house opened as a museum in 1939.

Collections House

The Collections House, at Strada Eroilor 64, occupies the former Ținc pharmacy building. It is another separate museum stop, so allow time to move between addresses and confirm its current exhibition and entry schedule.

Other county branches

The wider museum network includes the Rural House “Ioan Avram Dunăreanu” in Suhurlui and memorial houses in Ivești and Costache Negri. The museum’s current contact page marks some locations as closed for restoration or reorganisation. Do not travel to a village branch without checking its live status first.

Hours, tickets and contact

The museum’s Lapidarium page currently lists Wednesday–Sunday opening, 10:00–18:00 in April–October and 09:00–17:00 in November–March, with Monday and Tuesday closed except for cultural events. The contact page includes inconsistent weekend wording for some sections, so use the museum’s phone or latest announcement to verify the exact opening for each building.

A Galați County Council tariff schedule published in 2024 listed admission at 4 lei for adults and 1 leu for children, pupils and students; the same schedule listed a 5 lei fee for non-commercial photography. These are reference figures, not a guarantee of today’s prices. Confirm current admission, eligibility and photo rules with the museum before paying or taking pictures.

How to plan your route

  1. Begin at the Lapidarium. Give the exhibitions 60–90 minutes, depending on your interest in archaeology and temporary displays.
  2. Continue to Cuza Vodă House and the Collections House only after confirming both are open. They have separate addresses and may have different access arrangements.
  3. Allow a half-day for the three city sites, including time to walk or arrange a short taxi between them. If you have only an hour, choose one site rather than rushing all three.
  4. Make county branches a separate day trip. Verify opening, transport and return options before leaving Galați.

Getting there

Galați is a major Danube city in eastern Romania. The museum locations are in the urban area and can be reached by local taxi or public transport; use the exact street address in a current map, since “Paul Păltănea History Museum” refers to several locations. The Lapidarium is opposite the Greek Church, a useful landmark. If arriving by train or coach, check onward local transport and the return timetable, particularly for evening visits.

Visitor tips

  • Check current opening and temporary exhibitions on the official museum site before choosing a day.
  • Ask which language guided support is available; do not assume every display has full English interpretation.
  • Photography may require a separate fee or permission. Ask staff before taking pictures, especially of temporary exhibits.
  • Historic houses can have steps, narrow doors and uneven floors. Contact the museum about access needs in advance.
  • For a relaxed city day, pair one or two museum sites with a walk along Galați’s Danube waterfront; check weather and daylight before heading out.
