Enjoy a railway built for a mountain landscape

Opened in 1863, the Oravița–Anina line is a landmark of Banat railway engineering. CFR describes a route of about 34 kilometres with fourteen tunnels and ten viaducts. The journey is deliberately slow, giving you time to watch forested slopes, rock cuttings and bridges appear beyond the carriage windows.

This is a scheduled railway journey rather than a guaranteed steam excursion. The operator describes diesel traction on the unelectrified line. Historical photographs illustrate its setting and railway character, but do not establish which locomotive or carriage will be allocated to your departure.

Book the outward and return journeys together

CFR requires seat reservations and sells tickets online subject to availability, with advance sales up to thirty days ahead. Its current route page lists one train pair and a journey of just over two hours each way. Check the journey planner for your exact date before booking accommodation or arranging a transfer.

Reserve both directions if you intend to return by train. A single journey leaves you at the other end of the line, and an assumed extra service may not exist. Check the final fare and any applicable discount in the booking process; local-resident fares require specific evidence and are not general tourist prices.

Allow time to find the correct station

Confirm whether your journey begins in Oravița or Anina, and use the station address rather than a town-centre pin. Allow time for parking, the final walk and boarding. Ask your accommodation about a transfer if you are arriving without a car; a tour advertised as a railway trip may include road travel to the starting station.

For an onward connection, leave a realistic buffer and a backup plan. Check with CFR about mobility access, luggage, bicycles and any particular seating requirements before purchase. Carry water, an easy snack and suitable layers rather than relying on an unconfirmed onboard catering service.

Make the train the centrepiece of the day

A straightforward plan is to start with the outward train, use the interval at the other end for a modest meal or short walk, and return on your reserved service. Keep that interval practical: it is not enough for an ambitious distant attraction unless the current timetable and a confirmed transfer make it workable.

Spend another day exploring Oravița’s cultural heritage, including the Old Theatre when access is confirmed, or add a separately organised visit to the Miniș valley. Treat the railway, a waterfall drive and a long gorge hike as distinct activities rather than squeezing all three into the same afternoon.

Choose a base that suits the railway timetable

Compare accommodation in Oravița and Anina by station transfer arrangements, breakfast time, parking and evening meal options. A rural guesthouse can be attractive but may add a substantial last journey. Ask your host for the actual road time to the station and confirm the return pickup if required.

When considering an organised trip, check whether reserved train tickets, both directions and station transport are included. A rental car can help with other Banat sights, but it stays at your starting station during a return journey. Confirm driving routes and insurance terms before adding remote forest roads.
