Orașul de Floci is the archaeological footprint of a medieval market town near Giurgeni, in eastern Ialomița County. Once a trading point in Wallachia connected with routes to the Danube crossing, it is now a quiet landscape of archaeological remains rather than a preserved historic town. A small museum exhibition introduces the story; nearby ruins and earthworks reward visitors who arrive with realistic expectations and have checked access ahead.

What was Orașul de Floci?
The name appears in a 1431 document connected with customs privileges for merchants from Brașov. The town developed around trade, including the wool trade suggested by the name “Floci”, and grew on routes between the interior and a Danube crossing. The archaeological site contains traces of the former urban settlement and buildings from its later medieval and early modern periods.
The Ialomița County cultural directorate lists the protected archaeological reserve and the remains of two churches and other structures, including the settlement at “La Mănăstire”. Its historical summary describes growth in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, followed by decline as conflict and changes in the course of the Ialomița altered the landscape. The settlement was later affected by flooding in the twentieth century.
Start at the museum exhibition
Before walking around the reserve, visit the “Orașul de Floci” museum exhibition if it is open. The National Heritage Institute describes it as a roadside modern building with a permanent exhibition on a vanished medieval Wallachian town. Displays include archaeological finds such as glazed bowls, coins, pipes and ornaments, as well as maps and digital reconstructions of buildings identified in excavations.
The Institute’s museum record lists an indicative visiting time of 10:00–16:00 and was updated in August 2026. Confirm current access, appointment requirements and any closures with the Ialomița County Museum before travelling. The exhibition and the open archaeological reserve are related but distinct parts of a visit; check whether both are accessible on your date.
Walking around the archaeological reserve
Expect open ground, low archaeological features and church ruins, not standing town streets or reconstructed houses. The location can be difficult to interpret without the museum context, so allow time to read the information panels and follow marked visitor routes. Do not climb on masonry, move stones or enter excavated areas. Archaeological material may remain beneath the surface.
The landscape itself helps explain the site: old river channels and raised landforms shaped where people settled and how goods moved. The Ialomița’s course changed over time, and the surrounding plain can feel exposed in summer. Bring water, sun protection and footwear suited to uneven ground; there may be little shade or visitor infrastructure outside the exhibition building.
Michael the Brave and local tradition
A monument to Michael the Brave stands near the former town, and local heritage accounts associate the site with his birth. Treat the story as an important local tradition rather than the only reason to visit: the site’s documented significance as a medieval trading town and archaeological landscape is substantial on its own. The monument provides a point of reflection within a much wider archaeological setting.
Getting there
The site is near Giurgeni in Ialomița County, close to the DN2A corridor toward Hârșova and the Danube. A car is the most practical way to reach it; public transport and last-mile connections are limited and should be planned carefully. Use a current navigation map, confirm the entrance and parking arrangements locally, and do not assume rural services are available nearby.
Plan Orașul de Floci as a dedicated half-day trip or combine it with a longer journey through eastern Ialomița. Slobozia is a useful service base; from there, allow time for the rural drive and check fuel, food and return connections. Lake Amara is a separate visit in the other direction. Do not squeeze the archaeological reserve between fixed appointments if you want time to explore thoughtfully.
Visitor advice
