Oltenia Museum, Craiova: Three Sections and Visitor Guide
Plan a visit to Muzeul Olteniei across its history, ethnography and natural-science sections. These are separate destinations within Craiova, so choosing the collection and checking its address is the first step to a useful museum day.
Choose the section that interests you
History and Archaeology occupies a former school building completed in 1906. This is the section illustrated in the photographs on this page; the ivy-covered exterior is an older view of the same building, not another branch. Start here if you want a regional historical context for the places you are visiting in Oltenia.
For traditional life and material culture, choose the Ethnography section at Casa Băniei, a historic building rebuilt in 1699. Natural Sciences offers a different focus, with palaeontology and collections about the natural world. Its published exhibition history includes a planetarium; check whether a presentation is running and whether it requires an additional ticket.
Hours, tickets and contact details
The operator currently publishes Tuesday–Sunday opening from 09:00 to 17:00. Its ticket page lists standard admission at 12 lei for adults, with concession categories. Confirm which section a ticket covers, the last entry time and any temporary exhibition charges before paying. Do not assume a single-section ticket automatically admits you to every building.
A separate Muzee Dolj combined ticket is also listed, including the three Oltenia Museum sections and several other museums. Read its current inclusions and validity conditions if planning several visits. For section-specific questions, the published numbers are +40 251 417 756 for History, +40 251 411 906 for Natural Sciences and +40 351 444 030 for Ethnography.
Finding the correct museum building
Use the section name and its street address in your map search. History and Archaeology is at Madona Dudu Street 14; Natural Sciences is at Popa Șapcă Street 8; Casa Băniei is listed by the operator at Matei Basarab Street 16. A generic search for Muzeul Olteniei may direct you to only one location.
Walking can connect museum stops with central sightseeing, but check the distances for your chosen route. Use a taxi when that better suits your available time or mobility. Ask the specific section about stairs, lifts and accessible entry before assuming all three buildings have identical facilities.
A museum day without rushing
Choose one section for a focused visit or reserve a longer half-day for two sections and the walk between them. Around an hour per collection is a starting estimate, not a limit: exhibitions, reading labels and a scheduled presentation can extend your visit. Verify opening on the date you plan, especially around public holidays.
Pair Casa Băniei with a city-centre walk, or combine Natural Sciences with a later outdoor break. Craiova Art Museum is a separate institution in the Jean Mihail Palace; include it as another deliberate stop rather than confusing it with one of the Oltenia Museum’s three sections.
Accommodation and useful visitor habits
A central Craiova base makes it easier to spread the sections across more than one day. Before booking accommodation, compare its location with the museums you actually intend to visit. Travellers arriving late should schedule the museums for the following morning instead of relying on an unconfirmed late entry.
Ask about photography rules and language support when purchasing a ticket. Follow signs around fragile objects and leave time to understand the regional context. Booking a guided visit may be useful for a group, but confirm availability and arrangements directly with the museum first.
