Ochiul Beiului Lake: Blue-Green Water, the Bei Valley Walk and Visiting Advice

Walk through the forest to Ochiul Beiului, a small karst lake known for its clear blue-green water. Plan the approach through the Bei valley, enjoy the lake from the path and decide separately whether conditions allow an extension to Beușnița.

Best for: a forest walk and karst scenery
Allow: a half-day outing, depending on the start
Setting: Bei valley in Cheile Nerei–Beușnița National Park

Enjoy a small lake with a distinctive setting

Ochiul Beiului is a compact karst lake in the forested Bei valley. A university-led protected-area project describes it as fed by a submerged spring and known for its green-blue colour. It is a place to slow down, watch reflections and appreciate clear water rather than expect a large lakeside promenade.

Light, shade and the season change its appearance, so an online photograph is not a promise of the exact colour you will see. Look from the established visitor path and leave room for others to pass. The wooded setting is part of the attraction; avoid stepping into fragile banks for an unobstructed photograph.

Decide where your walk actually starts

The park’s marked routes link Podul Bei with Ochiul Beiului and continue much farther towards Crivina and Buhui. The long route’s published duration does not describe the lake visit alone. Confirm a practical return walk and its starting point with the park, taking account of the permitted road access on the day.

Wear walking shoes suitable for mud and uneven ground, and carry drinking water. Shade makes the forest pleasant but does not remove the need to check weather and daylight. Treat the lake as protected scenery, keep out of the water and follow all signs; do not use it as a bathing or picnic platform.

Reach the Bei valley rather than the lake by road

Plan your approach through Potoc and the Podul Bei area, checking current parking and forest-road arrangements before driving farther. Navigation applications may suggest roads that are unsuitable or restricted. Leave the vehicle only in a permitted place and keep access clear for other visitors and park operations.

Public transport to the surrounding villages does not automatically provide the final journey to the walking start. Arrange a local transfer if you are travelling without a car. Accommodation around Sasca can help organise the day, but confirm the service and price rather than assuming transport is included in the room rate.

Make the lake the main objective

Start with a comfortable walk along the Bei valley and allow time at the lake without blocking the path. Take a short rest on an appropriate firm area away from the bank, then assess your remaining daylight and energy. Returning by the same confirmed route is a sensible option for a relaxed first visit.

Beușnița is a separate extension beyond the lake. Check the onward path and waterfall conditions before adding it, and remember that every extra outward minute needs return time. A visit to the lake should not turn into an unplanned crossing to a distant trail endpoint simply because the same markings continue through the forest.

Stay close enough for an unhurried start

Guesthouses in Sasca Română, Sasca Montană, Potoc and surrounding villages can serve as bases for the Bei valley. Compare the actual drive or transfer to your start, meal availability and access-road conditions. An early departure helps keep the walk flexible and leaves space for photography without rushing the return.

For a two-day visit, give the lake and Beușnița one day and choose a separately planned Nera Gorge section for the other. Ask local guides what suits the weather and your fitness. Book tours on the strength of their route and practical arrangements, keeping accommodation and transport decisions clear before arrival.
