Moldova Nouă and the Danube: Waterfront Walks and Clisura Excursions
Discover the Romanian bank of the Danube around Moldova Nouă, with a waterfront base, nearby Coronini scenery and time to explore the western Clisura. Plan river outings separately from the more distant eastern gorge.

Find your bearings on the Romanian Danube
Moldova Nouă is a town in Caraș-Severin County, in the Banat region of western Romania. Its name does not place it in Romania’s northeastern Moldova region or in the Republic of Moldova. The riverside district of Moldova Veche provides the most useful starting point for understanding the town’s relationship with the Danube.
Begin with an unhurried waterfront walk where public access is available, looking across the broad river towards Serbia. Working port facilities and industrial land are separate from visitor promenades. The main photograph shows the Romanian town from the opposite bank; the second illustrates nearby Coronini, an excursion rather than a town-centre landmark.

Explore Coronini and the western Clisura
Coronini makes a natural next stop along the Romanian bank. County tourism information highlights the Baba Caia rock and the hilltop Ladislau fortress, facing Golubac across the river. Check the current approach and site access locally before attempting a hill walk; a ruin seen from a road or boat does not guarantee a maintained visitor trail.
The surrounding area includes river islands, wetlands, caves and wooded valleys. Local tourism information identifies Valea Mare as a nearby nature reserve. Choose an outing that matches current conditions and permitted access. Wildlife sightings are unpredictable, and islands or caves should not be treated as places you can enter without arranging an appropriate visit.
Use Moldova Nouă as a practical road-trip base
A car gives flexibility between the town, Coronini and rural stops, but check the day’s route and fuel availability before setting out. Ask the local tourist information centre about current bus services or a booked transfer if travelling without a vehicle. Do not build an itinerary around an assumed frequent waterfront bus.
For a river trip, confirm the departure point, operating day, weather policy, safety equipment and whether the boat actually lands anywhere. Historical ferry announcements do not establish a current crossing schedule. If including Serbia, verify the operator’s current service and the travel and vehicle requirements before committing to the detour.
Allow a day for the waterfront and nearby scenery
Start in Moldova Veche with a walk and a meal, then travel towards Coronini for river viewpoints and any confirmed fortress access. Keep some spare time for changes in weather or boat departures. Return to your base before attempting unfamiliar minor roads after dark.
With another day, investigate the villages around Sichevița or Gârnic and their local heritage, using advice from the tourism office. The eastern Danube gorge is a separate extension with additional driving. Avoid promising that every famous Clisura viewpoint is immediately outside Moldova Nouă.
Compare accommodation and excursions by location
Choose accommodation by its actual position, parking, dining arrangements and distance from your chosen river departure point. A description such as “Danube view” may cover a wider area than the town itself. Ask whether the room faces the river and whether there is a usable public walking route nearby.
For an organised excursion, confirm the full route, boat or road transport, guide language and cancellation arrangements. Accommodation, river activities and car hire can each be compared separately. Book only services whose current availability and meeting point you have checked.
