Location: Meziad, Remetea commune
Guided tour: around 50 minutes
Approach: approximately 1.2 km on foot

Inside Meziad Cave

The entrance portal opens into a cave known for its spacious chambers, mineral formations and natural bridge. Meziad is a nature reserve with important bat colonies, so the guided route introduces both the geology and the living habitat. The scale of the entrance is striking before you reach the illuminated interior.

Its long tourism history adds another layer to the visit. The cave was explored by Gyula Czárán and attracted early visitors to the mountains of western Transylvania. Today, the forest approach is part of the experience: allow yourself to enjoy it rather than treating the walk as an obstacle before the tour.

Tours, temperature and admission

The operator’s regional page lists a tour of about 50 minutes and temperatures of 9–12°C. Tours normally depart hourly, with at least two visitors needed for a departure. In May–October, the published schedule runs from 10:00 to a final entry at 17:00; other months have shorter hours. Reach the ticket desk at least ten minutes before the final departure.

The 2026 regional page lists adult admission at 40 lei and children aged 5–18 at 30 lei, while the older cave homepage shows lower figures. Confirm current prices when planning your visit. Request English guiding in advance, follow the guide’s instructions and avoid flash photography around the bats.

Reaching the cave from Beiuș

The documented approach from Beiuș passes Delani, Petreasa, Remetea and Meziad. In the upper part of Meziad village, an asphalt road branches towards Cabana Meziad. From there, the approach continues on foot along Valea Peșterii for approximately 1.2 kilometres. Save the route before leaving town.

Build the uphill walk into your arrival time, especially with children or anyone who needs frequent rests. For mobility questions, describe your needs to the operator before travelling; a large entrance does not mean the whole cave route is step-free. Without a car, arrange a return transfer rather than assuming transport will wait at the trailhead.

A practical Meziad day

Set aside a morning or afternoon rather than only the 50 minutes underground. Walk to the entrance, join a tour and return at an unhurried pace. Bring drinking water for the approach and have a plan for lunch after the visit; the rural setting makes a little preparation useful.

For a longer day, explore Remetea or the Roșia area once you know when your cave tour finishes. Choose a second stop close to the road you will actually use. A Meziad visit and a Padiș hike are different experiences; schedule the mountain plateau on another day if you want time to enjoy both.

Accommodation and a longer cave itinerary

Compare guesthouses around Remetea and Roșia for a stay focused on Pădurea Craiului. Beiuș works as a town base when you also want to visit Chișcău or continue towards the mountains. Check breakfast and dinner arrangements, since these affect how early you can leave for a timed cave departure.

When comparing guided trips, ask whether entrance fees, the forest approach and transfers are included. Independent travellers should book any return transport before setting out. Keep the cave visit flexible around the confirmed tour time, and use the operator’s contact details for up-to-date arrangements.
