Huși Wine Region travel guide: Zghihară, Averești and planning a winery visit

The Huși wine region is an appealing extension to a cultural trip through Vaslui County. Our suggested visit combines one agreed winery appointment with time in Huși, rather than a succession of unconfirmed cellar stops. Start by choosing what you want to learn or taste, then arrange the venue, transport and timing directly.

A wine landscape beyond the town

The local development group’s profile places Huși among surrounding hills and identifies vine growing and wine production as part of its local identity. The town is a useful place to combine an agreed wine visit with heritage sightseeing, but your winery’s arrival address may be outside the urban centre. Check the actual destination before booking accommodation or return transport.

Romania’s national wine authority publishes specifications and updates for DOC Huși, listing it within the wine-growing region of the Moldavian Hills. For a visitor, this is a useful source for understanding an origin name on a label. Our practical recommendation is to ask the host to explain the bottles served, their grape varieties and where the fruit was grown.

Local varieties to ask about

The Domeniile Averești vineyard account identifies Zghihară de Huși, Fetească Regală, Fetească Albă and Busuioacă de Bohotin among the region’s varieties. It describes Zghihară as a dry, light white wine with pronounced acidity and highlights aromatic rosé Busuioacă among its own wines. These are the producer’s descriptions; the bottles and vintages offered for a particular tasting should be agreed directly.

Our suggested approach is to compare a small selection with a clear theme: a local white variety alongside another white, or a white and an aromatic rosé. Ask about sweetness, vintage and the producer’s interpretation rather than assuming every bottle of a variety tastes the same. There is no need to know specialist vocabulary to enjoy a careful, guided comparison.

Averești: contact before travelling

Domeniile Averești is one producer to contact when exploring the region. Its official contact page gives Averești, Vaslui County as the location, the winery-shop telephone +40 728 313823, and vin@domeniile-averesti.ro.

Ask whether it can host your proposed visit, then agree the price, minimum group size, duration, language, wines and any food. We have not verified a standing public tasting timetable or a current package price. A shop contact and a vineyard description do not themselves confirm that a tour is available on your travel date.

Transport and time of year

Arrange return transport before a tasting, with a driver who will not drink or another confirmed option. Ask the host about the correct entrance, parking and road access. Do not assume that a taxi will be waiting outside an out-of-town venue at the end of the appointment.

For vineyard walks, ask what access is permitted and whether the ground or working conditions suit your group. Bring footwear appropriate to the agreed activity, and check the forecast shortly before travelling. Harvest can be an interesting topic for a host to explain, but it is also a working period; participation in picking or cellar work needs a specific arrangement.

A simple wine-country day

Our suggested plan gives the town and the wine visit separate blocks of time. Explore Huși and have lunch, then attend one confirmed appointment without another tightly timed stop afterward. If the visit is unavailable, keep the town itinerary and choose local wine with a meal instead.

See the Huși travel guide for the episcopal cathedral, local heritage and museum-access advice. Confirm accommodation and the next day’s journey before adding an overnight stay. Ask in advance about non-alcoholic options and the suitability of the planned visit for anyone accompanying you who will not taste wine.
