A first introduction to Craiova

Craiova is the county seat of Dolj and an important centre of Oltenia in southern Romania. Its city-break appeal lies in combining cultural stops with everyday street life. Begin in the central area and leave time to look at façades and squares rather than moving immediately between booked attractions.

Jean Mihail Palace gives the city an especially memorable museum setting, while Nicolae Romanescu Park offers a contrasting outdoor experience. The city photograph in this guide shows a central square at night; the second shows Casa Dianu. Treat these as starting points for noticing the variety of Craiova’s architecture.

Organising museums and your sightseeing days

Check the opening day of each museum before setting your itinerary. The national heritage register lists the art museum on Calea Unirii 15 as open Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–17:00, with Monday closure. Confirm holiday arrangements and current exhibitions directly before travelling for a specific collection.

Give yourself one principal indoor visit per half-day rather than filling every hour. Museums may have separate sections or temporary exhibitions, and a general name on a map does not always indicate one entrance. Ask about English interpretation, photography rules and step-free access if these affect your choice of visit.

Getting to Craiova and moving around

Compare current flight, train and coach options for your departure city, then check the connection from your arrival point to your accommodation. Flight schedules and onward transport change, so confirm both arrival and departure arrangements before booking a late landing or an early return.

Walking works well for a focused central itinerary, while a journey to a park or another district may suit local transport or a taxi. Check current routes and ticket arrangements with your host. Drivers should confirm parking in advance and avoid assuming a city-centre hotel has its own parking spaces.

Two days without rushing

On day one, explore the centre, visit the art museum if it is open and leave the later afternoon for another short cultural stop or a café break. Choose lunch and dinner in the area where you will already be walking, so the day is not dominated by transfers.

On day two, give Nicolae Romanescu Park an unhurried morning or afternoon and add a museum section that matches your interests. Keep any wider Dolj excursion on a separate day. A Danube trip requires its own transport plan and should not be treated as a quick extension of a city walking route.

Choosing accommodation and local experiences

For a short stay, prioritise a practical location for the places you plan to visit rather than a generic central label. Compare walking distances, noise, breakfast arrangements and check-in hours. If you arrive by train or plane, include the transfer cost and travel time when assessing a room rate.

An architecture walk or cultural tour can add context, but ask which interiors are included and which stops are exterior views. Confirm guiding language, admissions and group size. A rental car is more useful for a wider regional journey than for a day spent around the central museums and squares.
