Chilia Veche travel guide: the northern Danube Delta, village stays and boat trips
Chilia Veche is a base for exploring the northern part of the Danube Delta, on the Chilia branch beside Romania’s frontier with Ukraine. It suits a stay centred on the river, local accommodation and organised outings. Choose it deliberately as your base: a journey here is different from following the Sulina branch to Crișan or continuing to the Black Sea.

Begin with the village and river
The county council’s older locality profile identifies the Chilia branch as the northern boundary and highlights the river, lakes and Orthodox church as local points of interest. Use it for geographical context, rather than its old population or infrastructure figures. A short village walk and an exterior look at the church can complement time on the water.
Ask your host about access if you hope to enter the church, and avoid planning around assumed opening hours. Keep working landing stages clear, use public paths and respect residents’ homes. An unhurried walk is more useful than a checklist of buildings whose access has not been confirmed.
Plan the arrival before choosing dates
NAVROM Delta includes Chilia Veche on its Tulcea–Periprava route. Check the current sailing days and your return connection directly; the network map does not establish a daily service.
Road access also exists, but arrange current directions with your accommodation before setting out. Ask about the precise approach, road and crossing conditions, parking and whether your vehicle is suitable. Do not use the county’s historical road descriptions as a present-day driving report. If arriving by boat, get the landing point and any onward pickup agreed in advance.
Accommodation and activities
La Califarul Alb, on Dunării Street, describes village accommodation with a pool and parking, alongside river excursions. Its optional services page lists kayak hire, boat excursions and boat rental, as well as fishing with a partner at Stația 11. These are examples of activities to enquire about, rather than inclusions guaranteed with every room.
Ask whether outings are guided, what equipment is supplied and how the route changes with conditions. For kayak hire, discuss your experience, the proposed route and a clear return arrangement. Do not assume that a rental gives you permission or the skills to navigate all nearby waters independently.
Stația 11 describes accommodation, gastronomy, excursions and fishing, including different options on its own waters and in the wider Delta. If fishing is your main interest, confirm the exact location, current rules and required permissions before paying. A private fishery offer and a trip onto natural reserve waters are different arrangements.
Check the current frontier situation
Before travel, read the UK government’s Romania travel advice. As checked on 5 October 2026, it notes military activity in neighbouring Ukraine and incidents involving drones entering Romanian airspace or waters. Follow local authorities’ instructions, including RO-Alert messages, and do not approach military debris. Ask your host or guide about any current local restrictions affecting the planned route.
A flexible two-night stay
- Arrival: reach your accommodation, confirm the return journey and take a short village walk if time permits.
- Full day: choose one guided water outing or a prearranged fishing activity. Leave time for a meal and rest at your base.
- Departure: allow a generous margin for the journey back to Tulcea before onward travel.
Book meals ahead where requested and explain dietary requirements before arriving. For boat trips, bring water, sun protection and a layer for exposed stretches; request an appropriate life jacket, including the correct size for children. Discuss boarding arrangements if you have mobility needs.
Read our Danube Delta planning guide for the wider reserve and permit arrangements. Keep wildlife undisturbed, take litter back and use the routes agreed with your operator.
