Cetățile Ponorului Guide: The Padiș Karst Circuit and Cave Portal
Discover an immense limestone portal, forested sinkholes and dramatic viewpoints on a demanding mountain outing in Romania’s Apuseni Natural Park.

A natural fortress of limestone
Cetățile Ponorului means “the fortresses of Ponor”, a fitting name for a landscape of monumental rock walls. The attraction is a karst complex of deep sinkholes and a cave portal, with water continuing through underground galleries. The drama comes from the contrast between the enclosing limestone and the forest above.
Different photographs show very different parts of this place: a viewpoint above the depressions, a descent towards the portal, or a specialist trip underground. Be clear about which experience you are planning. Seeing the entrance on a hiking outing does not mean you can continue through the river cave as an ordinary visitor.

Circuit difficulty and seasonal limits
Salvamont’s blue-dot circuit starts at Cabana Padiș, passes Poiana Ponor and the karst complex, and returns via viewpoints and Glăvoi. Its route sheet gives 12 kilometres, roughly five hours and 552 metres of cumulative ascent. It rates some sections difficult and prohibits the circuit in winter. Treat the timings as an estimate for walking, not a promise including long breaks.
The route description includes steep scree, cables and a ladder, with an optional approach beneath the portal only at low water. These are reasons to choose a suitable guide or another walk if the terrain is beyond your experience. Check current conditions with Salvamont and avoid improvising descents from the rim.
Reaching the trailhead
The documented driving approach comes through Sudrigiu, Pietroasa and Boga towards Padiș or Glăvoi. Confirm which starting point matches your planned route and where you may park. A route calculated from Cabana Padiș will have different logistics from one arranged with a guide at Glăvoi.
Allow time for the mountain road, organising equipment and finding the signed departure point. Save your map offline before leaving the valley. If arriving by transfer, agree on a realistic return window and a way to contact the driver; a full circuit needs a generous part of the day.
Building a sensible mountain day
For capable hikers in suitable conditions, dedicate a day to the circuit and leave early enough to keep daylight in reserve. Pause at Poiana Ponor and the viewpoints without letting photography distract you from the footing. Follow the marked route and any local closures, rather than using a dramatic online image as a route instruction.
If the forecast or group fitness does not suit the circuit, ask locally about a shorter alternative and its actual access conditions. There is no need to include the portal descent in every visit. An easier plateau outing can be a rewarding day, while the more demanding objective waits for better conditions.
Accommodation, guiding and equipment
Staying around Padiș or Glăvoi gives you time to prepare the night before. Ask your host about breakfast, packed food, parking and current access. Carry water, rain protection and footwear suitable for rough ground, and make sure everyone in the group understands the planned difficulty before committing to it.
For a guided hike, clarify whether the itinerary includes the portal descent or only viewpoints. Underground exploration requires specialist arrangements distinct from a walking tour. Combine this mountain day with a guided show-cave visit on another day if you want an introduction to the Apuseni’s underground landscape with managed visitor access.
