Brâncuși Monumental Ensemble Guide: Calea Eroilor, Route and What to See
Follow Constantin Brâncuși’s Calea Eroilor through Târgu Jiu, from the stone works in Central Park to the Endless Column, with practical advice for a respectful and unhurried visit.

Understand the Calea Eroilor ensemble
Created by Constantin Brâncuși in 1937–38, Calea Eroilor is a memorial axis dedicated to those who died in the First World War. The work unfolds across Târgu Jiu rather than inside a single museum: the Table of Silence, Alley of the Chairs and Gate of the Kiss are in Central Park, the route continues along Calea Eroilor past the Church of the Holy Apostles, and the Endless Column stands in a park at the eastern end.
Allow time to walk between the pieces and notice how the ensemble changes from intimate stone forms to a monumental vertical landmark. The city’s visitor information centre describes guided routes and can confirm current meeting points and booking requirements.

Walk the route from the Jiu to the Endless Column
Start in Central Park by the Jiu, where the Table of Silence and its circular seats form the western section. Continue through the Alley of the Chairs to the Gate of the Kiss, then follow the central avenue east. The Church of the Holy Apostles marks the middle of the axis; continue onward to the Endless Column and the surrounding park.
The official city tourism centre advertises a short guided walk of roughly 40 minutes and a longer historic route. Treat these as guided-tour durations rather than the time needed for your own visit: photographs, pauses and crossing the urban route can extend the outing. Reserve a guide in advance and verify whether a fee applies to the route you choose.
Practical notes for visiting respectfully
This is a living public space as well as a major work of art. Follow posted instructions, avoid climbing or sitting on the sculptures, and leave room for other visitors. The route includes park paths and city streets; wear comfortable shoes, take care at crossings and check locally for temporary works or event closures.
Most of the experience is outdoors, so weather matters. In warm weather, carry water; after rain or in winter, expect damp or slippery paths. If step-free access is important, ask the tourist information centre about the current path conditions rather than assuming every section is accessible.
Combine the ensemble with a Gorj stay
A half-day can introduce the principal works, but an overnight stay leaves room for the city’s museums and historic centre. With more time, pair Târgu Jiu with Hobița, Tismana or Baia de Fier; these are separate sites and need their own transport planning.
