Black Church, Brașov: History, Tickets and Visitor Guide
Step inside Brașov’s landmark Gothic church for historic textiles, carved details and the musical heritage of its Lutheran community. The Black Church is an essential cultural stop just beside the old town’s main square.
History and highlights
Construction of the great Gothic church began in the late fourteenth century as Brașov prospered through trade. The fire of 1689 devastated the building; its familiar name is traditionally associated with the fire-darkened walls. Rebuilding changed the interior, making the church a record of several periods rather than a single medieval moment.
Look for the historic baptismal font, murals, richly decorated seating and Ottoman textiles associated with the city’s merchants and guilds. Organ music is another part of the church’s identity. Read the displays slowly, and ask which features are accessible during your visit rather than assuming every collection or upper level is open.

Tickets and opening hours
At the October 2026 review, the official adult sightseeing ticket is 30 lei. Until 15 October, visitor hours are Tuesday–Saturday 10:00–19:00 and Sunday–Monday 12:00–19:00. The published winter schedule starts on 16 October 2026, closing at 18:00 with the same opening times. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing.
Concerts and religious ceremonies can change sightseeing access. Check the official programme for your exact date and confirm concessions directly, since evidence of eligibility may be required. Enquire about a guided explanation in advance; availability and language should be confirmed. Treat a concert as a separately planned experience, with its own timing and admission arrangements.
Getting there in Brașov
The church stands beside Piața Sfatului in the walkable historic centre. Approach on foot through the surrounding streets and allow a little time to admire the exterior and Honterus courtyard. Cars do not offer an advantage for the final short walk, and parking should be arranged outside pedestrian areas.
From the railway station, use current local bus information or a taxi to reach the centre, then walk to the church. If you have limited mobility, contact the visitor team about the entrance, thresholds and seating before buying tickets. Nearby paving can be uneven, so comfortable shoes are useful even for a city visit.
A rewarding old-town itinerary
Start with the church exterior, visit the interior during confirmed sightseeing hours, and continue to Piața Sfatului for a café break. This sequence gives you time to connect the building with the town that supported it. Budget around an hour inside rather than treating entry as a quick photo stop.
Add a walk along the foot of Tâmpa if conditions suit, or choose another museum for a rainy afternoon. A planned organ concert can be a memorable evening addition. Leave space between reservations and check event-related closures before arranging a tightly timed city tour.
Where to stay and useful advice
Accommodation in or near Brașov’s historic centre works well for travellers exploring on foot. Check parking separately if you are driving and ask about stairs in older buildings. Staying closer to the railway station may suit onward connections, but involves a transfer or a longer walk for sightseeing.
Speak quietly inside this active church, follow photography instructions and avoid interrupting worship. A light layer can be comfortable in a large stone interior. Plan meals in the surrounding centre, and choose any tour based on its confirmed language, duration and included admission rather than its title alone.
