Bixad Monastery

A historic church, a devotional icon and a hillside setting make Bixad an interesting cultural stop in Țara Oașului. Allow room for worship and a quiet visit, then combine it with the museum and regional heritage around Negrești-Oaș.

What to look for at the church

Bixad’s municipal history dates the present church to construction beginning in 1769 and consecration in 1771. Dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, it combines a Greek-cross plan with a later tower and Baroque roof. At the western entrance, a triangular pediment sits above four columns. The rounded side apses give another useful detail to notice as you walk around the permitted areas of the exterior. Source: Bixad municipality.

The same account traces monastic life here to a 1614 reference, mentions Basilian monks in the eighteenth century and describes the interruption of the institution under communist rule in 1948. Later restoration included frescoes painted by Dumitru Bănică in 1988–1989 and a carved wooden iconostasis by Ady Iosif. These are different stages in the building’s history: its eighteenth-century origins do not mean every visible interior feature dates from that period.

A living place of worship

The monastery is also known for its icon of the Mother of God. Visitors interested in religious heritage can appreciate its significance to pilgrims while treating accounts of miracles as devotional belief. The neighbouring municipality’s tourism page highlights pilgrimage associated with the Dormition on 15 August and other late-summer religious feast days. Those calendar references are background, rather than a confirmed programme for your travel year. Source: Negrești-Oaș municipality.

For an ordinary sightseeing visit, ask about a quieter arrival time. For a service or pilgrimage, obtain the actual schedule and arrival instructions. Give worshippers space, keep conversations low and ask before photographing inside the church or taking identifiable photographs of people. Follow the community’s guidance on clothing, entry and areas reserved for monastic life.

Location, contact and access

This is Bixad in Satu Mare County, in north-western Romania. Check the county when choosing a map result: the monastery should not be confused with places of the same name elsewhere. Negrești-Oaș’s tourism page places it on a hill in Bixad, approximately 10 km north-west of the town. That is an orientation distance, not a promised journey time.

The municipal tourism listing gives +40 261 843 735 as the monastery’s telephone/fax number. It is an older visitor listing, so confirm that the number still reaches the community before relying on arrangements. The sources checked for this guide do not establish a current daily sightseeing timetable or a published admission tariff.

  • Ask when the church is accessible to visitors and whether a service affects your proposed arrival.
  • Confirm the exact entrance, parking arrangements and any group requirements.
  • If you need a step-free route, ask specifically about gradients, thresholds and interior access before travelling.
  • Check whether interior photography is permitted and whether any guide or donation arrangements apply.

The older tourism page mentions limited accommodation for pilgrims. Treat that as a reason to enquire, rather than an available room or a booking offer. If an overnight stay matters to your journey, obtain explicit confirmation or arrange accommodation separately.

Combine Bixad with Negrești-Oaș

A suggested day begins with a confirmed visit to the Oaș Country Museum, followed by lunch and Bixad at the time agreed with the monastery. The museum’s indoor galleries and open-air collection have separate addresses, so decide which you want to see before setting out. Leave flexibility if a service or visitor arrangement changes the order.

Our Țara Oașului regional guide gives a broader framework for village heritage and a slower stay. A short monastery visit can fit into that journey; a major pilgrimage deserves its own planning. If your interests extend to city architecture, use the Satu Mare guide for a separate city day instead of crowding every stop into one outing.

Before you go

Use the church history to understand what you see, then obtain current practical information from the community. A respectful visit with enough time to pause will usually be more rewarding than arriving with a fixed photo checklist.
