Bănița Gorge: River Passage, Hiking and the Dacian Fortress Route
Bănița Gorge is a narrow limestone passage carved by the Bănița River near Petroșani. A new thematic route opened in 2026 linking the gorge with the Dacian fortress above it, but the walk involves a river passage and a steep forest climb. Check current conditions before going; high water can make the route unsuitable.
A compact limestone gorge
Bănița Gorge lies in the Bănița–Merișor–Baru corridor, around eight kilometres north-west of Petroșani. The river has cut through limestone, leaving steep rock walls that narrow over the water. The gorge is within the wider Grădiștea Muncelului–Cioclovina Natural Park landscape, close to Bolii Cave and the remains of the Dacian fortress of Bănița.
This is a natural river passage rather than a paved promenade. Expect wet rock, uneven footing and potentially cold water. Conditions depend on rainfall and river level; a route described as easy in one season can become hazardous after rain.
Themed route to the Dacian fortress
Hunedoara County announced a themed route including Bănița Dacian Fortress and the gorge, opened to visitors from 1 August 2026. The local report describes medium difficulty and about 40 minutes for the outward walk; reaching the fortress involves traversing the gorge and continuing uphill through forest. Treat the time as a planning reference, not a guarantee.
Check the 2026 route announcement and ask the park or local tourism office whether the route is currently open, marked and passable. The itinerary may be closed or unsafe during high water, storms or maintenance. Do not attempt to cross the gorge if water is fast, deep or rising.
Water, footwear and responsible access
Wear waterproof hiking footwear with firm grip and bring a dry layer for after any wet crossing. A trekking pole can help on slippery surfaces. Avoid the gorge during heavy rain, snowmelt, thunder or when water is discoloured or moving strongly. Do not enter the river passage if you cannot judge the conditions or if other hikers are turning back.
Stay on the marked route, do not climb unstable rock, and keep children close near water and steep ground. There may be no staffed visitor facilities at the gorge. Take drinking water and pack out all rubbish. Verify any entry fees, access rules and seasonal restrictions with the park administration rather than relying on old trip reports.
Plan the wider Petroșani–Hațeg visit
Bolii Cave is a nearby stop with a more structured visitor approach; confirm its opening schedule separately. Petroșani offers food, accommodation and rail connections in the Jiu Valley, while Hațeg makes a base for Densuș, the geopark and Retezat’s western approaches.
