Anastasie Fătu Botanical Garden, Iași: Collections and Visiting Guide

Set on Copou Hill, the “Anastasie Fătu” Botanical Garden is a large university garden where landscaped walks meet living scientific collections. Founded in 1856, it is among the most rewarding green escapes in Iași, with themed outdoor sections, seasonal flower displays and a greenhouse complex.

A garden founded for study and public learning

The garden’s history began in 1856, when physician and naturalist Anastasie Fătu established Romania’s first botanical garden in Iași. The current site on Copou Hill was developed from the 1960s, and the university now describes it as covering about 87.95 hectares. It serves teaching and research as well as public visits, so its identity is different from a conventional ornamental park.

The grounds are organised into ten themed sections, including Romanian flora and vegetation, phytogeography, systematic plant collections, useful plants, an arboretum and the Rosarium. This variety makes the garden worth exploring at an unhurried pace: the interest lies in both the designed landscape and the botanical context of the collections.

Highlights through the seasons

The Rosarium is one of the garden’s signature areas. The university describes a collection of around 800 rose varieties, although exact numbers and flowering conditions can change. Late spring and early summer are generally the best time to look for roses in bloom, but the garden’s calendar and weather determine what visitors will see.

The greenhouse complex brings together plants that cannot withstand the local outdoor climate, including tropical and subtropical collections. Greenhouse access follows a different timetable from the outdoor sections. Seasonal exhibitions, especially autumn displays, can add colour and are popular with local families, photographers and students. Check the official announcements for exhibition dates rather than assuming a display is open year-round.

Another distinctive feature is a section designed for visitors with visual disabilities, with aromatic plant species and Braille explanations. The garden is also an outdoor learning space: keep to marked routes, read plant labels, and avoid picking flowers or disturbing research collections.

Opening times and tickets

At the time this guide was checked, the official garden website listed the outdoor sections as open daily from 09:00 to 19:00. The greenhouse complex was listed Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and closed Monday and Tuesday. The site’s fees page listed general admission at 20 lei per person, with separate pricing for flower exhibitions and greenhouse visits on days when the greenhouses are closed. Rates and seasonal hours can change, so confirm them on the official visitor page and official fees page before setting out.

The university specifies the public entrance at Strada Dumbrava Roșie 7. Do not rely on a map pin at another edge of the expansive grounds; follow the official entrance instruction. For a guided group visit, the garden asks visitors to book in advance. Wheelchair users can request assistance for outdoor and greenhouse visits at least 48 hours ahead; the official fees and services page gives contact details and describes ramps and a greenhouse lift.

Planning your visit

  • Allow at least two hours for a relaxed walk; add time if you plan to see the greenhouses or a seasonal exhibition.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The site is large, with sloping paths and varying surfaces; weather can make some routes muddy.
  • Bring water in warm weather and plan shade breaks. Follow any temporary closures or route signs.
  • Check the greenhouse timetable separately from the outdoor garden hours.
  • For accessibility assistance, a guided visit or current group arrangements, contact the garden in advance at gbot.is@uaic.ro or by phone at +40 232 201 373.

Getting there and nearby places

The garden is in Iași’s Copou neighbourhood, north of the central boulevard. From central Iași, use current local transport information or plan a walk uphill; journey times vary with your starting point and traffic. The designated entrance is on Dumbrava Roșie Street. Check the university’s current directions before you travel, particularly if arriving by car, as parking arrangements can change.

Combine the garden with nearby Copou Park, known for its cultural memorials and tree-lined paths, or return to the centre for the Metropolitan Cathedral and Palace of Culture. Browse the Romania destinations directory for more trip ideas.
