Amara is a small lakeside resort in Ialomița County, about 7 km from Slobozia. Its long, curved lake, open Bărăgan landscape and seasonal beach facilities make it a warm-weather escape from the county seat; spa and wellness services offer another reason to stay. Plan around the season, confirm which facilities are operating and treat the lake as a protected natural area as well as a place for recreation.
Why visit Amara?
Amara lies on the north-western shore of Lake Amara in the Central Bărăgan plain. The lake is the resort’s central feature, and local tourism information describes it as a natural, protected area with birdlife. Around it, the resort combines open-air recreation with bath and spa facilities operated by local providers. The setting is low-lying and spacious rather than mountainous, making it a different kind of Romanian holiday: unhurried, sun-focused and best enjoyed with time to rest.
Amara’s bathing and mud treatments are part of its spa tradition, but they are health services, not a substitute for medical advice. Ask a qualified practitioner whether a treatment is suitable for you, and check what a facility currently offers before booking.
Lake, beaches and outdoor time
In warm weather, visitors come for lakeside walks, swimming where permitted, sunbathing and time at the resort’s managed beaches. The official Amara tourist information centre lists beaches including Perla, UGSR, Splendid and Mircești. Their operators, access, services, fees and opening periods can change; confirm directly before travelling. Do not assume every shore is a public swimming beach.
The lake is also important for nature. Watch waterbirds from a respectful distance, keep to established paths and never disturb nests or wildlife. The lake’s banks can be steep, and its water, access points and conditions may not be suitable for unsupervised swimming. Follow signs and local safety advice, especially with children.
Spa stays and accommodation
Amara has a history as a balneary resort, with hotels and treatment bases around the lake. Current facilities can include bathing, wellness and rehabilitation services, depending on the provider and season. Ask what is included in a stay, whether treatments need advance appointments, and whether a medical referral or consultation is required. If you have a health condition, speak with your clinician before using thermal, mud or other treatments.
Choose accommodation according to your plans: a lakeside stay suits a slow break, while Slobozia offers a broader town base and more everyday services. Before paying, confirm current room availability, treatment schedules, meals, accessibility, parking and whether the property is operating for your travel dates.
Getting to Amara
Amara is roughly 7 km from Slobozia and can be reached from the city by road via DN2C. A car or taxi offers the simplest last-mile connection, while local public transport may be available but should be checked against your travel date and return time. If arriving by train or coach in Slobozia, confirm how you will reach the resort before setting out. Avoid assuming that a late return connection will be available.
A relaxed day by the lake
Arrive in the morning, check which beach or lakeside facilities are open, and choose one area for swimming or a walk. Have lunch in the resort, then spend the afternoon resting or booking a spa service. Keep the day flexible: wind, heat, water conditions and private beach schedules can all affect plans. If conditions are unsuitable for swimming, enjoy a shoreline walk or visit Slobozia instead.
Best time to visit
- Late spring and summer: The liveliest period for lakeside recreation and beach services. Check local updates for opening dates and weather.
- Early autumn: A quieter time for walking and a restorative stay; outdoor facilities may begin to reduce their hours.
- Winter: More suited to a hotel or spa break than a beach holiday. Confirm what is open before travelling.
Responsible visit
Take rubbish with you, use marked access points and respect any protected-area signs. Do not collect plants, disturb birds or enter closed shore sections. Use only authorised bathing areas, supervise children closely and follow lifeguard instructions. Bring sun protection and drinking water during hot weather; there may be limited shade on open stretches.
