A Weekend in Buzău: Ulmet Rocks, Mud Volcanoes and Village Stops
The rounded rock formations at Ulmet are a good starting point for a weekend in Ținutul Buzăului. Known as trovanți or Babele de la Ulmet, their shapes invite curiosity, while the geopark’s interpretation explains the geological story. Build the visit around two main areas rather than a hurried circuit of every attraction.

Make time for the experience
1. Day one: Ulmet and its landscape
Allow time for the approach on foot, the uphill path and the steps shown in visitor accounts. Explore the formations without climbing on fragile surfaces, then return with enough daylight for the descent.
2. Choose one nearby cultural stop
Use the geopark’s visitor information to select an interpretation centre, village visit or a separately planned heritage stop. Check its opening arrangements before adding it to your day, especially if it needs an appointment.
3. Day two: the mud-volcano area
Make the mud volcanoes a separate outing with the correct site pinned on your map. Confirm weather-related access and current visitor arrangements, then leave time for a meal and the onward journey.
Before you go
Ulmet is an outdoor visit with an uphill approach, not a drive-up viewpoint. Ask about the current path, parking and admission arrangements before promising it to someone with limited mobility.
Bring drinking water and footwear with grip. Wet ground can change the practicality of both the rock formations and the mud-volcano visit.
A car is useful for a route between dispersed villages. Budget for rural driving and verify the final road approach; distances alone do not give a reliable arrival time.
